Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing this letter to you because I stayed at your hotel last night and forgot my crucial documents there. Actually what happened exactly is that when I booked my cab, it arrived before time even I did not get time to pack my stuff. So, i am sure that I forgot my papers in the room cabinets while packing my bags.

Moreover, I was returning from one of the interview that is why I carried all my documents with me . Therefore, it includes all the certificates like BCID, driving licence, and educational papers. Honestly, these papers are really essential for me as my whole future depends on it.

It would be appreciated if you can help me in this issue . Please keep these papers with you, untill I come back to pick it up. Thank you for considering my request.

Yours faithfully,

Jyoti Sharma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, she clearly states where she believes she left the papers ('in the room cabinets while packing my bags'). Second, she explains why they are important by detailing that they include essential identification and educational documents ('BCID, driving licence, and educational papers') needed for a job interview. Third, she tells the manager what action to take ('Please keep these papers with you, until I come back to pick it up'). The tone is appropriately formal for a business correspondence letter, and all requirements are met adequately, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure that addresses distinct points. Paragraph one introduces the issue and location, paragraph two explains the importance and contents, and the final paragraph outlines the requested action and sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'Honestly' are used, though referencing and transition management are at times a bit mechanical. For instance, 'it includes all the certificates' has a slightly unclear pronoun reference. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, supporting a clear logical progression overall.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The candidate demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully using functional workplace and travel-related terms such as 'crucial documents', 'cab', 'certificates', and 'driving licence'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though with occasional inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'returning from one of the interview' (instead of 'an interview') and 'pick it up' (referring to plural papers as 'it'). However, these minor lexical slips do not impede communication, placing the response securely in the Band 6 territory.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and subordinate clauses ('I am writing this letter to you because I stayed...'). There are several grammatical errors present, including 'even I did not get time', 'one of the interview', and the agreement error 'until I come back to pick it up' for plural papers. Punctuation errors also appear, such as spacing before commas. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout, reflecting the characteristics of Band 6 performance.
