Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to inform you that last week I stayed in your Comfort Inn hotel and unfortunately, while checking out I left my important documents in one of the drawers beside the bed. I was in room 206 and I was in there from 9 to 14 September.
These documents are related to a business deal and i need them in my next meeting. I do not only need them for me but also, to show to one of client who is coming from Europe especially for the meeting. I do not have ant other copy of these papers so, I want you to collect them and keep somewhere safe.
I would be grateful if you could send me the papers before 20th September. I am ready to pay the express post charges but please send me the papers as soon as possible. I hope you will consider my situation favorably.
Thanks for your time and consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Mani

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have fully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly stated where you left the papers, mentioning that they were in 'one of the drawers beside the bed' in room 206 of the Comfort Inn hotel. You explained why they are important by noting that they are related to a crucial business deal and needed for a visiting European client. Furthermore, you told the manager what action to take, asking them to collect the papers, keep them safe, and send them to you via express post before September 20th. Your tone is appropriately formal for a business-related complaint or request letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. This meets the Band 7 requirements for fully addressing all parts of the task with clear ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
Your letter is organised into logical paragraphs that follow a clear progression. You start with an appropriate greeting and statement of purpose, move on to the details of the lost items and their importance, specify your request, and finish with a polite sign-off. You use basic cohesive devices appropriately, such as 'while', 'because', and transition phrases like 'I would be grateful if'. However, referencing and transitions could be slightly smoother to reach higher bands. For instance, the transition between paragraphs two and three is somewhat abrupt. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, contributing to an overall coherent arrangement that allows the reader to follow your request easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to clearly convey your message. You use some good functional phrases such as 'inform you', 'business deal', and 'express post charges'. However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies and typos, such as lowercase 'i' instead of 'I', 'client' instead of the plural 'clients', and 'ant other copy' instead of 'any other copy'. These represent minor slips rather than systematic errors. While you attempt some appropriate task-specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited and lacks the flexibility and precision of higher bands, which keeps your lexical score at a solid Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using conditional and relative clauses like 'I would be grateful if you could send me the papers before 20th September.' Your control over basic grammar is good, and the majority of your sentences are easily understood. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as punctuation issues (missing commas after introductory phrases) and spelling/typographical slips like 'i' and 'ant'. However, these errors do not impede communication at all. You show good control of tense usage across past and future contexts ('stayed', 'left', 'would be', 'am ready'), supporting a stable Band 6.5 performance.
