Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
The purpose of my writing today is to bring your attention towards a lost documentation that I could have possibly forgotten inside my room.
Actually, I had checked-in on September 10, 2025 and stayed inside room 1510 at your hotel. While leaving the room before check-out on the next morning, I was attending an extremely important business call.
Depite being cautious, I had probably left my project file, containing confidential data, inside the room locker.
The information inside the file is significantly crutial for the operation of my business and therefore is the backbone of the organization.
Hence, I would request you to carefully have the room inspected. If the documents are located, can you please immediately contact myself on my cellphone?
Thank you for your time. I look forward to receiving your reply promptly.
Your sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student covers all three bullet points required by the task: stating where the papers were left, explaining their importance, and instructing the manager on what action to take. Specifically, the writer mentions checking in to room 1510 and leaving the project file in the room locker. The importance is highlighted by noting that the file contains confidential data crucial for business operations. Finally, the manager is asked to inspect the room and contact the writer via cellphone. However, there is a penalty to consider regarding length. The official word count is 141 words, which fails to meet the 150-word minimum requirement. Consequently, Task Achievement cannot exceed Band 5.5 due to this under-length penalty, despite all bullet points being successfully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter maintains a clear overall progression and logical arrangement. Ideas are separated into distinct paragraphs that correspond well to the letter's purpose, background, importance, and call to action. The writer uses basic cohesive devices appropriately, such as 'Actually' and 'Hence', though referencing could occasionally be smoother. Paragraphing is used sufficiently for a short formal letter, establishing an appropriate tone from 'Dear Sir' to the closing sign-off. While the layout is clear and easy to follow, the mechanical nature of some transitions prevents it from reaching a higher band. Overall, the structural flow is sound and fully understandable.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common items such as 'confidential data', 'significantly', and 'inspection'. However, there are notable lexical and spelling errors that prevent a higher score. For instance, 'documentation' is used incorrectly as a countable noun ('a lost documentation' instead of 'documents' or 'paperwork'), 'Depite' contains a spelling error, and 'crutial' is misspelled (crucial). Additionally, phrases like 'bring your attention towards' are slightly unnatural in collocation compared to 'bring to your attention'. Despite these limitations, the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the core message clearly without causing major comprehension issues.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses ('containing confidential data') and conditional forms ('If the documents are located, can you...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors. The opening sentence 'The purpose of my writing today is to bring your attention towards...' is overly wordy and awkward. Furthermore, 'contact myself' is grammatically incorrect, as the reflexive pronoun is used instead of the object pronoun 'me'. There are also tense inconsistencies, such as 'could have possibly forgotten', which slightly obscure the intended modal meaning. While these errors occur, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the meaning easily.
