Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you regarding some important documents which I accidentally left in your hotel during my stay last weekend.

I was staying in room number 345 and it was early morning when I started packing my bags to check out. When was organizing my clothes in the bag, I remember I kept a blue folder with all my documents in it aside on dinning table next to the kitchen. I thought I would keep them separately in my hand bag but unfortunately I forgot to take them with me.

This blue folder is very important to me since it has my Bachelor's degree with transcript, travel documents, license, passport including all my personal identity cards. All these documents are very crucial for my future and applying jobs.

I would be grateful if you could ask hotel manager or staff to investigate this incident at your earliest convenience due to the urgency of this matter. If documents are found safely, you could contact me through phone or email. I would also appreciate if you could mail these documents to my address.

Thank you so much for your understanding and assistance. I look forward to you response.

Kind regards,

Ashu Berwal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all the required bullet points from the prompt in a clear and appropriate manner. First, the student specifies where the documents were left, noting Room 345 on the dining table next to the kitchen. Second, the explanation of why the papers are important is well developed, mentioning that the blue folder contains a Bachelor's degree with transcripts, travel documents, a license, and a passport. Finally, the student clearly states what they want the manager to do, asking them to investigate the incident and either contact them or mail the documents back. The tone is appropriately formal for a business letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. The response achieves a Band 7.0 for fully addressing all parts of the task with clear supporting details.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. The paragraphs follow a natural narrative structure, moving from the introduction of the issue to the specific location, the importance of the items, the requested action, and a polite closing. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'When was organizing', 'This blue folder', and 'If documents are found safely'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the distinct ideas into readable blocks. However, there are minor cohesion and referencing flaws, such as 'I look forward to you response' (missing 'r' in your) and occasional minor slips in referencing flow. Overall, the organization is clear and easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 7.0 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully conveying the message. Phrases such as 'accidentally left', 'investigate this incident', and 'earliest convenience' show good command of functional vocabulary for a formal letter. However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies and misspellings, such as 'dinning table' (instead of 'dining') and the awkward phrase 'applying jobs' instead of 'applying for jobs'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is sufficient for the task and does not impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating reasonable control over grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'I am writing to inform you regarding some important documents which I accidentally left...' and 'This blue folder is very important to me since it has my Bachelor's degree...'. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and omissions, such as 'When was organizing my clothes' (missing subject 'I'), 'If documents are found safely' (missing article 'the'), and 'I look forward to you response' (should be 'your'). While these errors occur, they do not impede overall communication. The presence of these recurring mistakes points to a Band 6.0 level.
