Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope this email finds you well. I would like to inform you that I stayed in your hotel for 2 days in room no 24 on second floor due to some business purposes last week.

After checking out from the hotel when I reached home I realized that I forget some significant documents related to my business. I believe that while, leaving the room I have forget to collect the papers from desk beside the Television. I left the room in a hurry and did'nt perform the final check before leaving.

I would like to mention that those papers are really important to me and hold a confidential information about my upcoming business meetings and projects. If I loose those papers it's going impact my business and reputation along with major losses.

Therefore, I would like to request you to personally look into this matter to avoide any kind of data leakage. I would really appreciate if you could check the room for me and if found the papers could you please send them to me via courier services if possible. I ready to wear all the expenses for courier.

Thank you so much for all your support in this matter. Looking forward to get revert from you soon.

Kind regards,

Ram

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the general training task. The student clearly specifies where the papers were left, mentioning room number 24 on the second floor and specifically on the desk beside the television. The importance of the documents is thoroughly explained, noting that they contain confidential information regarding upcoming business meetings and projects, and that losing them would result in major business losses and a damaged reputation. Finally, the student clearly tells the manager what action to take, requesting him to personally look into the matter, check the room, and courier the papers back while offering to pay all expenses. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, satisfying the requirements of Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the context of the stay, to the missing item, to the importance of the documents, and finally to the requested action. Paragraphing is used appropriately and effectively. Cohesive devices are generally used well, such as 'After checking out from the hotel', 'Therefore', and 'I would like to mention'. However, there are some minor mechanical referencing issues, such as 'if found the papers could you please send them', where the clause structure is slightly awkward. Overall, the flow is coherent and easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task with some flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'confidential information', 'data leakage', and 'upcoming business meetings' show a good grasp of topic-specific language. However, there are occasional lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'I forget' instead of 'forgot', 'loose' instead of 'lose', and 'I ready to wear all the expenses' instead of 'I am ready to bear all the expenses'. Despite these slips, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the message clearly, placing it comfortably at Band 6.5, rounded to 6.0 based on frequency of minor inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('If I loose those papers...') and relative clauses. There are several grammatical and punctuation errors present throughout the text, including tense consistency issues ('I forget' instead of 'forgot'), missing auxiliary verbs ('I ready to wear'), spelling errors in contractions ('did'nt'), and awkward phrasing ('Looking forward to get revert from you soon'). While these errors are noticeable and detract from accuracy, they rarely impede communication, as the meaning remains clear throughout. This performance is characteristic of Band 6 grammar.
