Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to look for some important paper which I forgot in this hotel by mistakenly.
My reservation date was on September 15 for room number 242 at third floor. Next morning, I left room around 10 am. During the leaving time, I forgot my phone charger inside the room and went back to pick it up. Because, I was in rush and l kept my documents at side table of the bed and left room in hurry.
As, all papers are inside grey colour file and contained some important work information which can should need to be kept secret according to work policy.
If it goes into wrong hands, it could lead my termination from work.
I want you to immediate action for my help. I want you to check CCTV's as well If its not sumbit to loss and found departmant yet by any staff member.
I hope you will find me this file as soon as possible beacuse hotel also took responsiblity for guest items.
Yours faithfully,
Khushpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the prompt. First, she clearly stated where she likely left the papers, mentioning room number 242 and the side table by the bed. Second, she explained the importance of the documents, noting that they contain work-related information that must be kept secret to avoid termination. Third, she gave direct instructions to the manager, asking to check the CCTV footage and check with the lost and found department. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint or request to a hotel manager, and all parts of the task are adequately covered, earning a solid band 6.5 to 7.0 for fully executing the communicative purpose.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is generally organized with a logical progression from the incident description to the justification of importance, and finally to the requested action. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct ideas, such as the location of the papers, their confidentiality, and the manager's action steps. However, cohesion is occasionally faulty or mechanical, as seen with abrupt transitions like 'As, all papers are inside...' and 'Because, I was in rush...'. Referencing and logical connectors are sometimes awkward, but the overall arrangement is clear enough for the reader to follow the writer's intent without confusion, fitting the descriptors for Band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday details as well as formal requests. Words like 'reservation', 'confidential' (implied by secret), and 'department' are used appropriately. However, there are notable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'forgot... by mistakenly' instead of 'accidentally left', 'During the leaving time' instead of 'When I was leaving', and 'sumbit to loss and found departmant' containing spelling mistakes. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited accuracy, which places this performance firmly in the Band 6 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and causal clauses (e.g., 'If it goes into wrong hands, it could lead my termination from work'). However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors with prepositions and articles, such as 'at third floor' instead of 'on the third floor', 'in rush' instead of 'in a rush', and 'lead my termination' instead of 'lead to my termination'. Punctuation errors are also present, such as unnecessary comma splices. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the text from achieving a higher band.
