Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I forgot my documents in your hotel. I visited your hotel yesterday around 10:00 AM, for an interview conducted by Emirates Airlines. I entered the hotel and sat at reception (waiting) area with other applicants. I was carrying a brown shoulder bag with a document folder inside that bag. My interview was conducted at 12:30pm and it went for about an hour. I left the hotel at 1:40pm and came directly to my home.

When I reached home I couldn't able to find my qualification documents in the folder. The documents were with me when I entered in the interview room. Apart from reception and interview room, I didn't go anywhere else in the hotel. So, I think I left those documents either in interview room or maybe at reception area.

As you know, those are my qualification degrees and certificates, they are so important for my job as well as for career path as those are the only evidence of my qualification.

So, I request you to kindly check the above mentioned areas of your hotel and also ask your staff if they got any sort of papers in the hotel. Please search and let me know if you find them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the task instructions. First, you clearly stated where you think you left the papers, mentioning both the interview room and the reception area. Second, you explained why they are important by identifying them as your qualification degrees and certificates which are essential for your job and career path. Third, you told the manager what action to take by asking him to check those areas and consult the staff. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. All requirements are well covered, and the ideas are fully developed and relevant to the context. Therefore, this performance easily satisfies the criteria for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically sequenced and easy to follow. You organised your writing into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose: stating the problem, detailing the timeline, explaining the importance of the documents, and making a request. Cohesive devices such as 'When I reached home', 'Apart from reception and interview room', and 'As you know' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively. While referencing and linking could occasionally be slightly more sophisticated to reach the absolute highest bands, the overall progression is clear, logical, and fully coherent throughout the entire piece of correspondence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The lexical resource is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range of vocabulary with some appropriate attempts at less common items. Phrases like 'qualification documents', 'career path', and 'evidence of my qualification' fit the context well. However, there are some minor vocabulary inaccuracies or less natural word choices, such as 'forgot my documents in your hotel' (left/mislaid would be more precise) and 'if they got any sort of papers' (found/recovered would sound more professional). Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is clear and does not impede communication in any way, allowing for a comfortable understanding of your message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You have demonstrated a reasonable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional or temporal clauses like 'When I reached home I couldn't able to find...' and 'As you know, those are my qualification degrees...'. However, there are a few noticeable grammatical errors that prevent a higher score. For instance, the phrase 'couldn't able to find' contains a redundant auxiliary verb structure and should be 'could not find' or 'wasn't able to find'. Additionally, there is a minor punctuation and conjunction issue in 'The documents were with me when I entered in the interview room' ('entered' is a transitive verb here and does not require 'in'). Nonetheless, the majority of sentences are clear and your meaning is never obscured.
