Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
The purpose of my writing today is to inform you about the important document that I forgot in your hotel room during my last visit.
Unfortunately, I believe I left the document beside the TV desk in the room 207. I stayed in the hotel from 15 to 16 September, and I only noticed after coming home that a document was missing.
However, I need that paper for my job interview, so for me that document is more important to get employment. Additionally, replacing it would be more difficult and time-consuming. So, I urgently need that paper before next week.
I would be truly grateful if you could ask your housekeeping staff to check the room or contact the lost property department. Despite everything, if the paper is found, contact me as soon as possible so I can come and pick it up quickly.
Thank you for your help. I am hoping to hear a positive response from your side regarding my missing paper.
Yours faithfully,
Kevin Gohil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task instructions. The student clearly states where the papers were left, mentioning 'beside the TV desk in the room 207'. The importance of the documents is also explained, highlighting that they are needed for a job interview and that replacing them would be difficult and time-consuming. Finally, the letter effectively tells the manager what action to take by asking them to check the room or contact the lost property department and notify the writer promptly. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager, and the purpose is clear throughout. The response earns a solid Band 7.0 for fully addressing all aspects of the prompt with relevant and clear ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical progression from stating the purpose of the communication to detailing the location, explaining the importance, and requesting action. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the location details in the second paragraph and the justification in the third paragraph. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, with transition words like 'Unfortunately', 'However', and 'Additionally' guiding the reader smoothly through the text. However, referencing is occasionally slightly repetitive or less fluid, such as the repeated use of 'that paper' and 'document'. Overall, the organisation is logical and the progression is clear, meeting the criteria for a Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate and appropriate for the task, successfully conveying the message without impeding communication. The student attempts some less common lexical items and collocations, such as 'time-consuming', 'housekeeping staff', and 'lost property department'. There are some slight awkwardness or minor word-choice inaccuracies, such as 'more important to get employment' rather than 'crucial for securing employment' and the phrase 'Despite everything' which feels a bit unnatural in this context. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate. Because the range is sufficient to allow some flexibility and precision, a Band 6.5 is awarded.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional elements adequately. Examples such as 'I would be truly grateful if you could ask your housekeeping staff to check the room...' show good control over complex structures. There are some minor grammatical slips and awkward phrasings, such as 'The purpose of my writing today is to inform you about the important document that I forgot' (where 'left' is more natural than 'forgot') and 'I am hoping to hear a positive response'. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and do not impede communication at all. The majority of simple sentences are error-free, warranting a Band 6.5.
