Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter reagarding a essential document that left in room 302 at your hotel.
Explain forward, I stayed at your place on last saturday of this month it was a business meeting that lasted for 2 hours and after that i checked out flew back to Winnipeg. Yesterday, when i was searching for document then i realised that i forgot my DS-160 form in hotel suite. I want that back because it is very significant to attend the USA interview that is on next week 23 of nevember.
I request you that if you can provide me that paper through the e-mail or Canada post in next two days then it will be very beneficial for me otherwise it will be a great lose of money any time for me.
I hope that you will think about my situation.
your sincerely
Gurbachan singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly state where you left the papers, mentioning room 302 and the hotel suite. You explain why they are important by stating that you need the DS-160 form for an upcoming USA interview on November 23rd. Finally, you tell the manager what action to take by asking for the papers to be sent via email or Canada post within the next two days. The tone is mostly appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager, and the purpose of the communication is entirely clear throughout the text.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter has a coherent overall arrangement, and the progression of ideas is generally logical. However, paragraphing is somewhat weak and irregular, with too many very short paragraphs and a lack of smooth transitions. While you use some cohesive devices such as 'otherwise' and 'yesterday', others are awkward or misused, such as the transitional phrase 'Explain forward,'. Reference pronouns are sometimes a bit unclear, and punctuation around linking elements could be improved to help the reader follow the flow of information more naturally.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'significant', 'beneficial', and 'situation'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'reagarding' instead of 'regarding', 'essential document that left' missing a passive verb, and 'lose' instead of 'loss'. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they reflect a Band 6 level where vocabulary control lacks precision and slips occur in spelling and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at variety with conditional and subordinate clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in tense usage, article omission, and word order, such as 'an essential document that left in room 302' and 'that is on next week 23 of nevember'. Capitalisation is also missing for proper nouns and the start of sentences in places. While these errors rarely completely impede understanding, they recur often enough to prevent the grammar score from reaching the higher bands.
