Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Simmi and I am writing this letter to inform you about my belongings that I have left mistakenly at your hotel on September 19.
I forgot to carry my blue folder with me during the checkout. If i am not wrong it should be on the study table of room 239. It has my name engraved on the top right corner, which says "Simmi" in golden color.
It is very confidential because it contains 2 signed blank cheques and my personal documents. I do not want this to go into wrong hands.
I would be highly thankful if you can secure this folder. i will be back by September 24 to get my stuff back. I would sincerely apologize for this and also be very thankful for your help.
For any other questions please do not hesitate to reach out directly on my cell number [redacted phone].
I Look forward to hearing from you
Simi.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The candidate has successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. First, the location of the lost items is clearly stated as the study table in room 239. Second, the importance of the papers is well explained by mentioning that the folder contains two signed blank cheques and personal documents. Third, the letter explicitly tells the manager what action is expected: securing the folder until the author returns on September 24. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning and the tone is appropriate for a formal complaint or request to a hotel manager. All requirements of the prompt are fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard correspondence conventions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the location of the folder, its importance, and the requested action. However, cohesive devices are somewhat basic. For instance, the phrase 'If i am not wrong' features a lower-case 'i', and transitions between sentences can feel a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is clear, but referencing could be slightly smoother to enhance the flow of ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common lexical items such as 'confidential', 'engraved', and 'hesitate'. However, there are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as using 'stuff' instead of a more formal equivalent like 'belongings' or 'folder' in the phrase 'get my stuff back'. Spelling and word choice are generally clear and do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily understand the context and the urgency of the request.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several punctuation and capitalization errors, such as the lowercase 'i' in 'If i am not wrong' and the lack of a full stop at the very end of the sign-off ('I Look forward to hearing from you'). Additionally, there are minor prepositional issues, such as 'reach out directly on my cell number'. Despite these errors, the grammatical structures used are generally correct and communication is not impeded at any point.
