Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Manager,
I am writing this letter with regard to the paper I left in the hotel after my stay.
I booked a room with the help of your hotel staff on last week. My room was on the 2nd foor, and the first single room . I belive that I left it there ,exactly on the table ,which was close to the fridge. I forgot to bring it with me because I was rushing back to checking out as I was already late.
I need my papers by next Monday as I am having my final project at the university. That papers have numerous important research evidence ,which actually determines my final grades.
Wold it be possible for you to send all the documents to my address by a delivery method? I would be delighted to send all the expenses that would come as your expenses .
I look forward to hearing from you soon and I appreciate all the effort and time you will be taking to resolve this issue.
Yours sincerely,
KEE KUE.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the location of the papers is clearly stated as being on the table close to the fridge in a 2nd floor single room. Second, the importance is explained well, noting that the documents contain research evidence vital for final university grades. Third, the requested action is clearly communicated, asking the manager to mail the documents and offering to cover delivery expenses. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, although the greeting uses Dear Manager instead of the prompted Dear Sir or Madam. Overall, the requirements of the task are adequately met with sufficient detail and development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the description of the lost item to the explanation of its importance and finally the request for action. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate distinct points, such as the location details and the justification for urgency. However, there are some minor referencing and mechanical issues with cohesion, such as awkward phrasing in transitions and incorrect spacing around punctuation marks. For instance, commas are placed before spaces rather than after them in sentences like 'I left it there ,exactly on the table ,which was close to the fridge.' Despite these minor flaws, the organization supports the overall message effectively.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The candidate demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'numerous important research evidence' and 'delighted to send all the expenses'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text. For example, 'paper' should be plural ('papers'), 'checking out' has a preposition error ('to checking out'), and 'send all the expenses' is unnatural phrasing for covering shipping costs. Spelling is generally accurate, but vocabulary limitations and minor slips prevent the score from reaching higher bands. The lexical resource is minimally sufficient to communicate the intended meaning clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and relative clauses ('which actually determines my final grades' and 'Wold it be possible for you to...'). However, there are several grammatical errors and typos, including spelling mistakes ('foor', 'belive', 'Wold'), incorrect verb tenses ('on last week' instead of 'last week'), and awkward preposition use. Furthermore, there are punctuation errors with spacing around commas. While these errors occur with some frequency, they do not impede overall communication, as the reader can easily understand the writer's intent. The grammar demonstrates a sufficient grasp of basic structures with attempted complexity.
