Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to seek a help from your side. I am a Facility Manager at Our Home and Appliances. Our company has conducted an exhibition at your hotel last night. Unfortunately, I had forgot my important documentation at your hotel.
The exhibition was so busy and I was scared to lose my important file. Therefore, I left it at your admin desk. I placed it on top of the table.
The file contains several important documents related to the company and I would not afford to lost it at any cost. It also includes contact details of our corporations. It is such a difficult task for me to arrange meetings without those data.
I would like to request you to keep my documentation safe. Next morning, I will collect it from your location. I am extremely sorry to bother you and your organization.
I hope you understand my concern.
Yours faithfully,
Anjali Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the task instructions. First, the writer specifies where they think the papers were left, mentioning that they placed the file 'at your admin desk' on top of the table. Second, the explanation of why the papers are important is clearly articulated through statements noting that the file contains 'several important documents related to the company' and 'contact details of our corporations.' Third, the manager is clearly told what action to take: 'I would like to request you to keep my documentation safe' and that the writer will collect it the next morning. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and all requirements are fully met, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organization. It follows a standard formal letter structure, beginning with the correct salutation 'Dear Sir or Madam,' and ending with an appropriate sign-off. The text is broken down into manageable paragraphs that separate the introduction, the location of the papers, the explanation of importance, and the request for action. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Unfortunately,' 'Therefore,' and 'It also includes,' ensuring smooth transitions between ideas. Although some referencing and linking could be slightly more sophisticated to reach higher bands, the current arrangement is cohesive, clear, and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a formal business context, including terms such as 'exhibition', 'documentation', and 'corporations'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'seek a help from your side' (instead of 'seek help') and 'I had forgot' (which belongs in grammar, but reflects lexical control too). Additionally, phrases like 'would not afford to lost it' contain verb form errors. While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the message clearly and attempts less common lexical items, these occasional inaccuracies restrict the score to a band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures (e.g., 'The exhibition was so busy and I was scared to lose my important file'). However, there are several grammatical errors present throughout the text. For instance, 'seek a help' uses an unnecessary article with an uncountable noun, 'I had forgot' should be 'I had forgotten', and 'would not afford to lost' should be 'could not afford to lose'. Punctuation and sentence structures are generally manageable and do not impede overall communication, but the frequency of these errors keeps the grammatical accuracy firmly at a band 6 level.
