Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to inform you that I left my important papers in your hotel.

Firstly, last week, my team and I stayed at your hotel for attending an important meeting. we stayed their for two days in room numner 202. unfortunately, I forgot my imporatant papers there. I vividly remember that we had meeting at your cafeteria, where I carried a bunch of papers with me. I have doubt that may be I left the papers in the cafe area or may be in the room.

This papers are very important for me because my whole presentation is dependent on it. I worked almost five months on this project, so if I would not get my papers back my project would be assign to someone else. As a result, I may face a big loss in my career.

I would like to request you to find my papers in this particular areas. I would be garetful if you could find this and help me save my career. Also could you please curier this papers on my address at Avance company, nadiad? I request you to check your CCTV cameras as well as could you please ask your find and lost department if anyone got my papers.

Lastly, thank you for your time and consideration. I look forwad to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt. You mentioned where you likely left the papers, specifically noting room number 202 and the cafeteria area. You clearly explained why the papers are important, stating that your presentation depends on them and that you could face career consequences if they are lost. Finally, you instructed the manager on what to do, asking him to search the areas, check CCTV, consult the lost and found, and courier the documents to your company address. The tone is appropriately formal for a business letter, though you missed the prompt's instruction to begin with 'Dear Sir or Madam,' instead using 'Dear Sir,'. Overall, the task is well addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement and follows a logical progression from stating the problem to explaining its importance, making requests, and signing off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'This papers are very important' lacks correct plural agreement, and sentences within paragraphs are sometimes disjointed. Referencing is generally clear, but mechanical cohesive devices like 'Firstly' and 'Also' are relied upon without smoother integration into the text. Despite these minor lapses, the letter is coherent and easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message. You use some less common phrases like 'vividly remember' and 'consideration', which show an attempt to vary your language. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and spelling mistakes, such as 'numner' instead of 'number', 'imporatant' instead of 'important', 'curier' instead of 'courier', and 'garetful' instead of 'grateful'. Furthermore, grammar-lexis overlaps occur, such as 'find and lost department' instead of 'lost and found department'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the score from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('if I would not get my papers back my project would be assign to someone else'). There are several grammatical errors and punctuation mistakes throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('This papers are' instead of 'These papers are'), incorrect tense usage ('we stayed their' instead of 'we stayed there', 'for attending' instead of 'to attend'), and passive voice errors ('would be assign' instead of 'would be assigned'). Punctuation at the ends of sentences and capitalization at the beginnings of sentences are also occasionally neglected. However, these errors rarely impede overall communication.
