Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I hope this letter finds you well. I, Dipti patel, recently stayed at your hotel, known as a Best Western located in North Bay on August 19th, 2026. The room was occupied by me was 107 down the hall. I realized I forgot some important documents in the room. It might be under the table near the large glass window.
There are the most important documents, including my presentation slides and my employee ID. I will require those during my presentation, which will be held next week. Without the documents, I am not able to attend and represent my presentation without my piece of ID.
I kindly request that you please try to search these items as per location which I described and if you able to courier it would be appreciated. I have already provided my details to your staff.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I am looking forward to your positive reply.
Yours sincerely,
Dipti Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the location of the lost items is clearly specified, stating the hotel name, room number 107, and the exact spot under the table near the large glass window. Second, the importance of the documents is explained by mentioning that they include presentation slides and an employee ID required for an important upcoming presentation next week. Finally, the manager is told what action to take, specifically to search for the items and courier them to the writer. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager, and all parts of the task are well-developed and fully addressed, earning a solid Band 7.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is generally clear and easy to follow, with a logical progression of ideas from the introduction of the stay to the description of the items, the request for action, and the sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as the location of the papers versus their importance and the requested action. Cohesive devices are used adequately, though some transitions could be smoother. For instance, 'There are the most important documents' is slightly awkward as a cohesive link to the previous paragraph. However, overall referencing is clear and the logical arrangement supports the purpose of the letter effectively, placing it securely in the Band 7 range.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended message. The writer attempts some less common phrases such as 'positive reply' and 'courier it'. However, there are noticeable lexical and collocation errors, such as 'The room was occupied by me was 107' (awkward phrasing) and 'represent my presentation' (repetitive and slightly unnatural collocation). Spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary is somewhat restricted and occasionally repetitive ('documents' is used multiple times). These minor inaccuracies and limited flexibility place the lexical resource at a Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and relative clauses ('if you able to courier it', 'which will be held next week'). However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, including 'I, Dipti patel, recently stayed' (capitalization error), 'The room was occupied by me was 107' (missing relative pronoun or clumsy passive voice), and 'if you able to courier it' (missing auxiliary verb 'are'). Furthermore, 'I am not able to attend and represent my presentation without my piece of ID' contains grammatical strain. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded, demonstrating control typical of a Band 6.0 performance.
