Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to inform you that I left my important papers at your hotel.

Firstly, last week, my team and I stayed at your hotel to attend an important meeting. we stayed their for two days in room number 202. Unfortunately, I forgot my imporatant papers there. I vividly remember that we had a meeting at your cafeteria, where I carried a bunch of papers with me. I have doubt that either I left papers in the cafe area or in the room.

This papers are very important for me because my whole presentation is dependent on them. I worked almost five months on this project, so if I do not get my papers back my project would be assigned to someone else. As a result, I may face a significant loss in my career.

I would like to request you to search my papers in these particular areas. I would be garetful if you could find these and help me save my career. I request you to check your CCTV cameras and could you please ask your lost and found department if anyone give my papers. Also could you please courier these papers on my work place, at Avance Company, Nadiad?

Lastly, thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Alphiya

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student has successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task prompt. First, the location of the lost papers is clearly stated as being either in the cafeteria or room number 202. Second, the importance of the documents is thoroughly explained, noting that the entire presentation and the writer's career depend upon them. Third, the letter explicitly tells the manager what actions to take, including searching the specific areas, checking CCTV footage, inquiring at the lost and found department, and arranging for a courier service. The tone is appropriate for a formal business communication, and the purpose of the letter is evident throughout. Therefore, the response fulfills all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised with clear paragraph divisions that correspond to the standard structure of a formal request letter. Progression of ideas is evident as the writer transitions smoothly from the background of the stay to the location of the papers, the reasons for their importance, and finally the specific requests. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Unfortunately', 'As a result', and 'Lastly' are utilised to connect sentences and paragraphs. However, paragraphing could be slightly more polished, and referencing occasionally feels a bit mechanical. Overall, the text demonstrates a coherent arrangement and easy navigation for the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general workplace context, including terms such as 'vividly remember', 'significant loss', and 'consideration'. There are some spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'imporatant' instead of important, 'garetful' instead of grateful, and 'This papers' instead of 'These papers'. Additionally, phrasing like 'if anyone give my papers' contains grammatical errors that affect lexical accuracy. Despite these slips, the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the message clearly, warranting a solid band six for lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('if I do not get my papers back my project would be assigned to someone else') and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors and typos present, including lowercase letters at the beginning of sentences ('we stayed their'), subject-verb agreement issues ('This papers are'), and incorrect prepositions ('on my work place' instead of 'at my workplace'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication or prevent the reader from understanding the main message.
