Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I'm writing this letter to inform you that I left my important company papers in your hotel room where I stayed for 2 days from 10th June to 12th June on my business trip.

I think it was at the time of packing my bag when I was preparing to log out from the hotel on 12th June that I left those documents on the bed. I'm quite confident about it as I was in a hurry and there was no place to keep it on, so I'm sure that papers are on the bed as there was no table or chair in my room.

Those papers are very indispensable and prominent because it belongs to my client and consists of confidential financial information about stakeholders and business partners. Moreover, it is a property of a company which I will held responsible for in case of lost or damaged.

I request you to please collect those papers from the room and post it to my below address via premium and instant postal service. I will pay the cost of the post service by the end of today to your hotel bank account.

Yours faithfully

Shahbaaz

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response fully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You successfully stated where you think you left the papers, mentioning that they were left on the bed in your hotel room on 12th June. You explained why they are important by highlighting that they belong to a client, contain confidential financial information about stakeholders and business partners, and represent company property for which you are held responsible. Furthermore, you clearly told the manager what action to take by asking them to collect the documents and post them via a premium postal service. Your tone is appropriately formal and polite for a business-related correspondence, and all parts of the prompt are well-developed and addressed thoroughly. Therefore, this performance comfortably satisfies the Band 7 requirements for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You begin with a standard professional greeting and an introductory sentence stating your purpose, move through the sequence of events and the justification of importance, and conclude with a specific request and sign-off. Paragraphing is used effectively, with distinct paragraphs handling the location of the papers, the reasons for their importance, and the requested actions. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and referencing pronouns are employed adequately to connect ideas, though occasional minor mechanical links appear. Overall, the text flows smoothly and the progression of ideas is very easy to follow, aligning well with a Band 7 descriptor for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some attempts at less common and topic-specific items, such as 'confidential financial information', 'stakeholders', 'business partners', and 'indispensable'. However, there are a few noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations. For instance, using 'log out from the hotel' is unnatural in a hospitality context, where 'check out' is standard. Additionally, phrases like 'place to keep it on' are slightly awkward, and 'postal service' is repeated closely. Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is adequate to convey your message clearly and without strain on the reader, supporting a solid Band 6.5 performance, which rounds to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and conditional elements. You demonstrate good control over basic tense usage and punctuation. However, there are a few persistent grammatical errors. For example, 'papers are very indispensable and prominent' contains redundant modifiers since 'indispensable' does not typically take 'very', and 'prominent' is the wrong adjective for confidential documents. Furthermore, you write 'there was no place to keep it on, so I'm sure that papers are on the bed' (shifting tense incorrectly from past to present) and 'which I will held responsible' (should be 'held' instead of 'be held' or 'will be held'). Finally, 'post it' should pluralise to 'post them' to agree with 'papers'. These errors do not impede communication, placing the grammar securely at Band 6.0.
