Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter regarding my recent stay at your hotel, The Grand Resorts Hotel, where I forgot some important documents.
During my stay I lived on the 8th floor of the building in room number 805. I was there with my family for an anual trip and I brought some office paperwork with me on the trip. On 20th of September, the day we check out from hotel I forgot some papers under the night table in the room.
These documents are very important as they are related to my work and it has all the upcoming projects of my firm. Apart from this, all the customer details are mentioned in those documents which has not been uploaded digitally yet.
I would kindly request the management if they could check the room thoroughly and ask the cleaning staff if they have disposed any documents from that room.
I hope the hotel managemnt will help me to find my documents at earliest convenience, and I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Sukhmanpreet Singh Malhi.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The candidate has successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. First, the writer clearly states where the papers were left, mentioning the hotel name, room number 805, and specifically 'under the night table in the room'. Second, the importance of the documents is explained well by stating they contain upcoming firm projects and unuploaded customer details. Third, the writer clearly instructs the manager what action to take, requesting a thorough room check and consultation with the cleaning staff. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint or request letter, and the purpose is communicated clearly throughout. The response meets all task requirements efficiently, earning a solid Band 7.0 for addressing all parts of the prompt with clear support and a consistent register.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the statement of the problem and location of the items, to their importance, the requested action, and finally a polite closing. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, breaking the text into readable chunks. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, such as 'Apart from this' and transitional phrases linking ideas, although referencing is occasionally slightly repetitive ('these documents', 'those documents'). Overall, the cohesion is clear and supports the flow of information well, aligning closely with the Band 7.0 descriptors for clear logical organisation and appropriate paragraphing.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'office paperwork', 'upcoming projects', and 'disposed any documents' are used accurately and appropriately within the context. However, there are minor lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'anual' instead of 'annual' and 'check out' instead of 'checked out', as well as a slight slip with 'at earliest convenience' missing the article 'the'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is flexible enough to convey the precise message without impeding communication. This performance reflects the Band 6.5 level, showing a good attempt at task-appropriate terminology alongside minor slip-ups.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional-like structures, such as 'I would kindly request the management if they could check...'. There are some grammatical errors present, notably tense consistency in the second paragraph ('During my stay I lived... I brought... the day we check out... I forgot...'), where 'check' should be in the past tense 'checked'. Additionally, 'managmnt' appears as a spelling error in the final paragraph. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of sentences are structured correctly. This balance of complex structures and minor recurring errors corresponds well to the Band 6.5 descriptors.
