Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to you because I left my important papers in your hotel.
I checked out from hotel yesterday at 11:00 am because I have to attend an important meeting and I did not had a enough time to check all my stuff.
According to me, I think I left my papers in my room as I was in hurry and I did not took all my items with me. I remember that I did not put that papers in my bag and they were kept separate on the computer table in the room.
Those papers are very important for me because I have prepared my whole meeting presentation on them and I am going to present it after 2 days.
I kindly request you to please check the hotel room or ask any staff member if they have seen my papers anywhere. Please inform me as soon as possible when you find my papers. I will be very thankful to you.
Kind regards,
Manju

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. You stated where you think you left the papers, mentioning that you left them on the computer table in your room because you were in a hurry. You explained why they are important by noting that your whole meeting presentation is prepared on them and you need to present it in two days. Finally, you told the manager what to do by requesting them to check the room or ask the staff and to inform you as soon as possible. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. All parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a band score of 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter follows a clear logical organization with an appropriate opening and closing, and the information is divided into sensible paragraphs addressing separate points. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'According to me', 'because', and 'and', although some transitions are a bit basic or slightly unnatural (e.g., 'According to me, I think'). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader smoothly through the purpose of the letter, the explanation, and the call to action. Overall cohesion is coherent, resulting in a band score of 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You attempted some less common phrases like 'checked out' and 'presentation'. However, there are some noticeable vocabulary and word choice errors, such as 'all my stuff' and 'put that papers' (using 'that' with a plural noun). Additionally, phrases like 'According to me, I think' are slightly repetitive. While these lexical errors do not impede communication, they restrict the score to a 6.0 under the lexical resource criteria.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using 'because' and 'as' clauses to explain reasons. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense and auxiliary verb mistakes (e.g., 'did not had a enough time' instead of 'did not have enough time' and 'did not took' instead of 'did not take'). Punctuation and articles also contain minor inaccuracies. Despite these frequent errors, meaning is never obscured, placing your grammar performance firmly at a band 5.5.
