Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to inform you that I accidentally left my important documents behind during my recent stay at your hotel.
My stay at your hotel was from 13 May to 15 May, and my room number was 301B. I checked out yesterday morning at 10 a.m. As far as, I can remember I left my document folder in a drawer beside the bed.
The documents are important because it has my all documents including my passport, educational certificates, and my wallet. My wallet has all my bank cards and a driving license so I was bit nervous about personal banking information.
I would appreciate it if you could investigate the concern with the staff and kindly help me to get my documents back. If you could find my documents please try to forward it on my home address provided on reception during my check-in.
I look forward to your response with some positive feedback.
Yours faithfully,
Prarthana Patil

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly stated where you think you left the papers, mentioning that they were in a drawer beside the bed in room 301B. You explained why they are important by detailing that the folder contained your passport, educational certificates, and a wallet with bank cards and your driving license. Finally, you told the manager what you want them to do by asking them to investigate the matter and forward the documents to your home address. Your tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose of the communication is immediately clear. All parts of the prompt are fully and effectively addressed, earning a solid score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your letter is logically organised with a clear opening, body paragraphs dealing with distinct points, and a polite closing. You used appropriate referencing and paragraphing to structure your thoughts effectively. However, there are minor issues with cohesion and punctuation; for example, the comma in 'As far as, I can remember' is unnecessary and disrupts the flow of the sentence. Additionally, some transitional phrases could be more smoothly integrated to enhance the progression of ideas. Nevertheless, the overall arrangement is coherent, and the layout follows standard letter-writing conventions, which ensures the reader can easily follow your message from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a formal hotel enquiry, using functional terms such as 'investigate the concern,' 'educational certificates,' and 'personal banking information.' However, there are some noticeable vocabulary and phrasing errors. For instance, you wrote 'it has my all documents,' which contains an unnatural word order and a grammatical slip, and you used 'forward it on my home address' instead of 'forward it to my home address.' You also repeated the word 'documents' frequently rather than using synonyms. While your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your needs clearly, these minor inaccuracies and repetitions prevent you from reaching a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempted a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional forms ('If you could find my documents please try to...') and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text. In the third paragraph, 'because it has my all documents' should be plural and have the correct word order ('because they contain all my documents'). Furthermore, you wrote 'so I was bit nervous,' which misses the article 'a,' and there are missing commas in compound sentences. Despite these recurring minor errors, your sentences remain comprehensible, and your grammar does not impede communication.
