Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this to inform you that I had a meeting with an International client at your hotel last week regarding our new projects. So, we were signing our new contracts at the conference room. After that, we went to dinning room for dinner along with those documents. As far as I know, I went straight to the parking without my documents after dinner.
So, could you please recheck dinning area and also reconfirm to the staffs if they found any papers.
That's documents are extremely crucial for me, because I need to submit to the management, before that I need to verify the contract cost, clients requirements and workforce.
It is my humble request to try to find out as early as possible, so I can continue with my contract procedure. Moreover, if you find those papers, could you please contact me via e-mail or phone. I will be available to pick as soon as I can come.
Thanks for your kind help on this urgent matter.
Your sincerely,
Rishil

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the task well. The student clearly states where the papers might have been left, specifically mentioning the conference room, dining room, and parking area. The importance of the documents is explained by highlighting their necessity for verifying contract costs, client requirements, and workforce before submission to management. Finally, the manager is told what action to take, including rechecking the dining area and contacting the writer via email or phone. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager, fulfilling all requirements of a General Training Task 1 response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter follows a clear logical progression from explaining the situation to requesting specific actions and concluding politely. Paragraphing is used reasonably well to separate the different points of the letter. However, some cohesive devices feel a bit abrupt or awkward, such as starting a sentence with 'So, could you please recheck...' and 'That's documents are...'. Referencing could also be smoother, but overall, the structure allows the reader to follow the train of thought easily, fitting the Band 6.0 to 6.5 profile well.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common items such as 'crucial', 'verify', and 'workforce'. However, there are noticeable lexical and grammatical-form errors regarding word choice and plurals, such as writing 'That's documents' instead of 'Those documents', 'staffs' instead of 'staff', and 'dinning room' instead of 'dining room'. Despite these errors, communication is not impeded, and the intended meaning remains clear throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing this to inform you that...' and 'Moreover, if you find those papers, could you please contact me...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing choices, including 'I had a meeting with an International client' (unnecessary capitalisation), 'So, we were signing' (informal transitional opener), and 'I will be available to pick as soon as I can come' (missing object and unnatural phrasing). While errors occur frequently, they rarely impede overall communication.
