Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Himanshi Patel, I booked room number 304 for one night last week. The main purpose of my email is to inform you that I may have left my important documents at the reception desk before checking out.

The documents are very important to me as they contain my personal information, financial details and some professional work materials. Apart from that, there is document of my international business meeting, which is essential for me to present in my company next week.

I think, you could help me to find my papers by watching the recording of your reception area and also by asking your staff whether they found anything. In addition, if you found them then please send them via express courier to my company address. The address is already written on the envelope.

I really appreciate your assistance in this matter and look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Himanshi patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. You state clearly where you think you left the papers, mentioning that you may have left them at the reception desk before checking out. You also explain why they are important by highlighting that they contain personal information, financial details, and essential work materials for an upcoming meeting. Furthermore, you tell the manager what action to take, suggesting security footage reviews, staff inquiries, and an express courier delivery. All parts of the task are addressed with a clear tone and purpose throughout. To reach the highest bands, some of these ideas, particularly the explanation of the documents' contents, could be extended with even greater detail and nuance, but the current level of coverage fully satisfies the requirements for this performance band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter shows a clear logical organisation and progression from start to finish. The purpose of the communication is established right at the beginning, followed by the justification for the papers' importance, and finally your requested actions. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate each distinct point, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. Cohesive devices such as 'Apart from that', 'In addition', and 'In this matter' are employed to connect your ideas, although some connectors feel slightly mechanical. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, you could integrate your sentences with a greater variety of referencing and substitution rather than relying on straightforward transitional phrases, ensuring the flow between paragraphs feels completely natural and unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common phrases such as 'essential for me to present', 'express courier', and 'earliest convenience'. Word choices are generally appropriate and communication is never impeded. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'there is document of my international business meeting' where the plural 'documents' or a different collocation would be more natural. To elevate your lexical score, you should focus on precision in word choice and collocations, incorporating more sophisticated phrasing and idiomatic expressions with greater control over style and register.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of English grammar. You successfully use relative clauses and modal verbs, such as 'you could help me to find my papers by watching the recording'. There are some minor grammatical errors and punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in 'I think, you could help me' and a missing plural article in 'there is document'. Despite these errors, your sentences remain clear and grammar issues rarely impede communication. To move up to higher band levels, you need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate tighter control over punctuation and grammatical agreement.
