Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I am writing this letter regarding my stuff that I left in my hotel room during my stay. I stayed in your hotel Mount Blanc at the Brampton location . I checked in on 28th of September and checked out on 30th of September in room number 304. I stayed there for my online meetings and I guess I left one imporatant file of mine that had my important business papers.I guess I left the file on the couch near to the window as I was packing my stuff there. Those are very important to me as they consist of my business ownership documents that I need to deposit by end of this week.
I want your help to keep them safe until I come to pick them up . The forlder has my name with blue marker saying Muskan Bhullar.
I hope you will look into the matter and help me find my papers.
Thank you.
Regards,
Muskan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You successfully addressed all parts of the task by clearly stating where you likely left the papers, explaining why they are important for your business, and telling the manager what action to take. Your position and purpose are clear throughout the letter. The ideas are extended and supported well, such as when you mention the specific room number, the exact location near the window on the couch, and the deadline for your business ownership documents at the end of the week. To reach an even higher level, you could have integrated these details more fluidly and provided a slightly more polished tone suitable for formal hotel correspondence, ensuring that every detail directly serves the purpose of the request without any minor redundancies.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter shows a clear overall arrangement with a logical progression from stating the purpose of the visit to explaining the situation, detailing the importance of the papers, and finally requesting assistance. You used paragraphing to separate your ideas appropriately. However, the connection between sentences is at times slightly mechanical, and referencing could be smoother to fully meet the higher band criteria. For instance, transitional phrases between sentences are sometimes basic or repetitive. To move towards a higher band, ensure that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and that referencing words tie your ideas together effortlessly, creating a seamless flow from the opening greeting to the final sign-off.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You used an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message about the lost papers and hotel stay. You attempted some less common vocabulary, such as 'ownership documents' and 'deposit', which demonstrates a fair attempt at precise terminology. However, there are some spelling and word-choice errors that prevent you from achieving a higher band, such as the spelling slip 'imporatant' and 'forlder', as well as repetitive use of simple phrases like 'I guess' and 'I stayed'. To improve your lexical score, you need to eliminate spelling mistakes, reduce repetition by employing synonyms, and demonstrate a wider, more varied control of less common lexical items with accurate collocations and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using relative clauses and subordinate clauses like 'as I was packing my stuff there'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as incorrect capitalization in the salutation ('Dear sir'), spacing issues around punctuation marks, and repetitive sentence structures starting with 'I'. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the reader can easily follow your meaning. To reach the next band, you need to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures with frequent error-free sentences, maintain strict control over punctuation and capitalization, and avoid repetitive structural patterns across your sentences.
