Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to request you regarding my documents that I forgot at the table after meeting. I would be grateful if you could provide with some assisatnce with this matter.

It was a brown colour file with my initial R written on the top left side of the file. Yesterday I was having a dentist appointment so in order to be on time I quickly packed my stuff and left. Unfortunately, I realised when I came home and saw that the file was missing in my bag. I think I left my file under the conference table.

This file is crucial for me as it contains all my certificates and documents inside it. Apart from that, I have made my important presentaion which I am supposed to present in an upcoming meeting. Considering it very significant it can help me in gaining my promotion. In addition, I had my personal identity kept in the pockets inside the file.

Finally, could you please look it after the file and hand it over to the receptionist. Also, if possible could you please let the othe members know about it so that they can also be careful about the file.

Thank you for you time and consideration. I look forward hearning it from you.

Yours faithfully,

Ridhima

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You successfully cover all three bullet points required in the task prompt. You state clearly where you think the papers were left by mentioning the brown file under the conference table, explain their importance by detailing your certificates, certificates, presentation, and personal ID inside, and instruct the manager to hand the file to the receptionist. All parts are addressed with a clear and appropriate tone throughout the letter. The response shows a well-supported development of ideas, moving from the description of the item to its significance and finally to the requested action. However, to push toward the highest bands, the explanation of the papers could include even more specific contextual details about the meeting itself, ensuring every point is fully elaborated without relying on slight generalisations in the final paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from start to finish. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate your greeting, the statement of purpose, the description and location of the file, its importance, your requested actions, and your sign-off. Cohesive devices are used throughout the text, such as 'Unfortunately', 'Apart from that', and 'In addition', which guide the reader smoothly from one point to the next. To reach the next level of cohesion, you need to use cohesive devices even more flexibly and ensure that referencing is always completely seamless, avoiding minor mechanical links like 'Finally' in favour of more natural transitional phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'crucial', 'appointment', and 'receptionist'. Your choice of words successfully conveys your message to the hotel manager. However, there are some word choice, spelling, and word form inaccuracies that prevent a higher mark, such as 'request you regarding' instead of 'write to you regarding', 'assisatnce' (spelling), 'color' spelling variations, 'make my important presentaion' instead of 'prepared an important presentation', and 'hearning' instead of 'hearing'. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision in spelling and collocation when using less common lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over narrative tenses and structures such as 'I would be grateful if you could...' and 'I realised when I came home and saw that...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('at the table after meeting', 'had my personal identity kept in the pockets'), preposition issues ('look it after the file' instead of 'look after the file' or 'look into the file'), and minor punctuation slips. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and the basic meaning remains clear. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and refine your control over prepositions and article usage.
