Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Rudresh Patel and I checked out of your hotel last morning around eleven. I was accquainted in room 315, where I think I forgot my travel documents. I kept my file inside the dresser.
It is very important for me to retrive the papers as soon as possible, because my passport and the boarding pass for my flight are in that file. On top of it, I have a return flight to Delhi in two days.
As it is certain, that I need my documents urgently, I would like you to speed post or deliver the papers to me. I am currently staying at The Ferns, in Windsor. It is approximately an hour and a half drive from your location. Furthermore, in order to cover the travel cost and any incoveniences it may cause, I will pay five hundred dollars as a token of appreciation.
I find myself in a very difficult situation and I hope that you will understand my concern and help me. Please feel free to reach out to me on my cell phone for any questions.
Yours faithfully,
Rudresh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.5
The response covers all parts of the task very well and maintains an appropriate tone throughout. You successfully explained where you left the papers, mentioning room 315 and the dresser, detailed why they are important by highlighting your passport and boarding pass, and clearly stated what action you want the manager to take by requesting a speed post delivery. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant details, such as offering to cover the travel costs and providing your current location at The Ferns. This meets the criteria for a very strong score, sitting comfortably just below the highest band due to minor areas of expansion that could be slightly more natural, but overall, it represents a highly effective and fully addressed task response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from start to finish. Paragraphing is used appropriately and sufficiently, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of your message, such as the missing items, the importance of the documents, and the proposed solution. You use cohesive devices effectively to connect ideas, such as "Furthermore" and "On top of it." However, the transition between sentences at times feels slightly mechanical rather than entirely seamless, which is why it achieves this solid level rather than the band above. Referencing is mostly clear, and the overall arrangement of information guides the reader smoothly through the narrative.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
Your lexical resource is adequate for the task and demonstrates an attempt to use less common vocabulary, such as "token of appreciation" and "urgently." However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and spelling that prevent a higher score. For instance, the word "accquainted" contains a spelling error and is used incorrectly in this context, where a phrase like "stayed in" or "was accommodated in" would be much more natural. Similarly, "retrive" is misspelled, and "incoveniences" contains a typo. While these errors do not impede communication and you show a reasonable range of vocabulary, mastering spelling and precise collocation will help elevate your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct compound and complex ideas, such as "As it is certain, that I need my documents urgently, I would like you to..." There are some grammatical errors and punctuation slips present, such as the unnecessary comma after "certain" and minor prepositional or phrasing choices. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow your meaning. To reach the next level, you need to increase the proportion of entirely error-free complex sentences and refine your punctuation control.
