Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task. You clearly stated where you left the papers, identifying room 201 and the drawer beside the bed. You also explained why they are crucial, noting that they are signed agreements necessary for your job and involve privacy matters. Finally, you told the manager what action to take by asking staff to search the room and locate the documents. Your ideas are extended and supported adequately, demonstrating a clear tone and purpose appropriate for a formal request. To move towards higher bands, you could expand slightly on the context or provide more precise details to fully develop every part of the message with even greater clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical sequence from stating the problem to explaining its importance and requesting action. Paragraphing is utilised to separate the introduction, details of the meeting and documents, and the final request. However, the progression between sentences can feel slightly mechanical, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as shifting between plural and singular nouns for the papers. While the organization is clear enough to guide the reader successfully, achieving a higher level would require more sophisticated and flexible cohesive devices, as well as smoother transitions between your points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message with common words and phrases like 'meeting', 'organization', and 'hotel room'. You also attempt some less common items such as 'crucial', 'privacy matters', and 'HR department'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, particularly in word form and collocation, such as writing 'agrement' instead of 'agreement', 'sign' instead of 'signed', and 'got' instead of 'found' or 'recover'. These occasional inaccuracies and spelling slips do not impede overall communication, but they restrict your score because they demonstrate a limited control over precision and word choice. To improve, focus on mastering standard collocations and correct spelling forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as when you explain why you booked the room and why the documents are important. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause some difficulty for the reader. Issues include incorrect capitalization in the middle of sentences ('30 september', 'I think'), faulty verb tense usage ('meeting which held on room 201'), missing articles ('in drawer', 'without this paper'), and awkward prepositional choices ('on room 201'). While your meaning remains generally understandable, the high frequency of basic grammatical and punctuation errors prevents a higher score. To reach the next level, you need to work on consistent error-free sentences, accurate subject-verb agreement, and correct article usage.
