Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I am writing this letter to inform you that yesterday I came with my colleagues to attend the official meeting. When I reached my workplace I did not find my documents file than I remembered I forgot my papers in your hotel.

Firstly, I wants to mention you the place where I forgot my papers. These are placed on the side corner table in room number 25.

Moreover, I wants to tell you these are official documents and also have some confidential information in these papers. So, I do not want these papers are approached by rivalry organization.

Lastly, I wants to request you please place these officials papers in your locker. I request to one of my trustworthy friends who are coming to your office and you would handover these files to my friend. I am sending you details of my friend for safety purpose.

I hope you would help me in this matter and place my documents in secure locker until my friend will come.

Yours sincerely,

Nosheen

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully address all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You state where you left the papers, explaining they were placed on the side corner table in room number 25. You explain why they are important by mentioning that they contain official and confidential information that you do not want approached by a rival organisation. Furthermore, you tell the manager what action to take by asking them to lock the documents away and hand them over to your trusted friend. However, the response sits at this level because some ideas show a slight tendency towards under-development; for example, the explanation regarding the sensitive nature of the documents could be expanded further to fully develop the ideas. To reach a higher level, you should provide more fully extended and detailed descriptions of your situation without losing focus.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose established from the beginning. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate your points logically, starting with the discovery of the lost items, moving on to their exact location, detailing their importance, and finally giving instructions to the manager. Progression is generally maintained through sequencing devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly'. Nevertheless, cohesion can sometimes feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, and referencing within the text could be smoother. To achieve a higher level, you should work on varying your cohesive devices and ensuring seamless transitions between sentences, making the logical connections between your ideas more natural and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'confidential information' and 'trustworthy'. However, there are noticeable vocabulary and collocation errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'documents file' instead of 'document file' or 'folder', and 'approach' used incorrectly in 'approached by rivalry organization' where 'accessed by a rival organisation' would be more natural. You also repeat verbs like 'want' and 'request' frequently. To improve your lexical score, you should focus on expanding your range of less common vocabulary, refining your word choices, and paying closer attention to proper collocations and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as 'I hope you would help me in this matter and place my documents in secure locker until my friend will come.' However, your control over grammar is inconsistent, featuring several noticeable errors. For instance, there are verb-form and agreement mistakes like 'I wants' instead of 'I want', tense inconsistencies such as 'until my friend will come' instead of 'comes', and missing articles like 'in secure locker' instead of 'in a secure locker'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but these persistent structural inaccuracies mean communication occasionally requires extra effort. To move up, you need to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences and ensure better accuracy in verb tenses and article usage.
