Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Manager,

I am writing to inform you about an important documents that I accidentally left at your hotel during my recent stay.

I stayed at your hotel for 2 days on last weekend. My room number was 310B and checked out on Monday at 10 a.m. Unfortunately, I think I left my important document folder in a drawer besides the bed.

The folder contain my travel documents and a personal banking details like passport, credit and debit cards, and a driving license. Therefore, I am a bit nervous about my banking cards security.

I would appreciate it if you could discuss the issue with your team and help me to retrieve my documents as soon as possible. If you find it, I would love to receive it via mail on the address provided on reception during my booking.

I look forward to your response at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Prarthana Patil.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully addressed all three parts of the prompt. You clearly stated where you think you left the papers, mentioning room number 310B and a drawer beside the bed. You explained why they are important by detailing the contents of the folder, such as your passport and banking cards, and you clearly told the manager what you want them to do by asking them to discuss the issue with the team and mail the documents to you. Your ideas are well-extended and supported throughout the letter, which shows a clear purpose and tone. To reach a higher level, you could have elaborated slightly more on the urgency or context of the retrieval process, ensuring every detail is fully fleshed out with even greater precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression from start to finish. You begin with a direct statement of purpose, move on to the location and contents of the folder in the body paragraphs, and conclude with a polite call to action and appropriate sign-off. You make effective use of cohesive devices and referencing, such as 'Unfortunately, I think I left...' and 'Therefore, I am a bit nervous...', which guide the reader smoothly through your narrative. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate your points. To achieve an even higher band, you could experiment with a wider variety of cohesive relationships and ensure that transitions between paragraphs feel completely seamless and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You used an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and functional phrases such as 'at your earliest convenience' and 'retrieve my documents'. However, there are a few lexical errors and slightly unnatural word choices that prevent a higher score. For instance, writing 'an important documents' is a pluralization error, 'besides the bed' should be 'beside the bed', and 'via mail on the address' contains an inappropriate prepositional collocation ('by mail to the address'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your message clearly and appropriately for a formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'I would appreciate it if you could discuss the issue...' and 'If you find it, I would love to receive it...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing subject-verb agreement ('The folder contain') and an incomplete introductory sentence fragment ('and checked out on Monday'). However, these errors rarely impede communication, and you maintain good control over most basic structures. To reach the next level, you need to produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences and eliminate basic tense and agreement slips completely.
