Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response covers all parts of the task well, fulfilling all bullet points in a natural and appropriate tone. You clearly state where you left the papers, mentioning room number 401 and the side table of the bed. You also effectively explain why the documents are important, noting that they contain information for your future product and presentation, which is crucial for your career progression. Additionally, you clearly tell the manager what action to take by asking staff to check the room and requesting contact if the papers are found. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the ideas are well developed with appropriate detail, though a slightly tighter focus on the exact location in the opening sentence could elevate this further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You make use of appropriate paragraphing to separate your greetings, the main issue, the explanation of importance, the requested actions, and the sign-off. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Moreover' to link your ideas about the importance of the documents. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical, such as the repeated use of 'I believe' and the phrase 'That papers', which slightly disrupts the natural flow. To reach a higher level, you could employ a wider variety of referencing pronouns and more sophisticated transition markers between paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary range is adequate for the task and allows you to communicate your message clearly. You make attempts to use less common items and functional phrases related to business and hotel stays, such as 'business project', 'check-out', and 'prompt reply'. However, there are some noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as writing 'in seeking help' instead of 'to seek help', 'in rushing of the check-out' instead of 'in the rush of checking out', and repeatedly using 'That papers' instead of 'Those papers'. Additionally, 'represent at my upcoming presentation' is slightly unnatural compared to 'deliver' or 'give' a presentation. These minor errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a mid-range control of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully structuring your request and explanations. There is a good attempt at multi-clause sentences, such as 'I want to request you if you could please tell your staff to thoroughly check room no. 401'. However, there are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'I will be really appreciate' instead of 'I will really appreciate' or 'I would really appreciate', and unnecessary comma usage in 'I believe, I left'. While these errors persist, your meaning remains clear and they rarely impede communication. To achieve a higher standard, you should aim for a greater proportion of completely error-free complex structures and refine your control over modal verbs and verb forms.
