Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Brown,

I am writing to inform you that i forgot my important documents in the room number86 where i stayed last night. I beleive that i have kept those papers on table, By the time i reached at hotel i was so tired so kept all my belonging on the nearby table. Moreover I wokeup late and was in hurry so checkout the room by forgeting to have look for car insurance papers. Those papers are very crucial for me as i would not be able to drive without those papers.Apart from this, as insurance company has already informed me that i would not be able to get more copies as they traffic police only verifies your insurance via original documents. So can you please ship those papers to me through post canada. I am ready to pay all the fee for parcel.

Thankyou for your help. Looking forward for your response.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all parts of the task. You clearly stated where you think you left the papers, explaining that they were in room number 86 on a nearby table. You also explained why they are important by pointing out that they are car insurance papers required by the traffic police and that you cannot get replacement copies. Finally, you told the manager what to do by asking them to ship the papers through Post Canada and offering to pay the fee. Your ideas are relevant and adequately extended, showing a clear purpose throughout the letter, which reflects a solid understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement, but the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by formatting and referencing issues. Although you open with a salutation, the body of the letter lacks proper paragraphing, and the text is written as a single dense block before the closing. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as starting sentences with 'Those papers' or 'So can you' without smoothly linking them to the preceding thoughts. While cohesive devices are present, they are sometimes used mechanically or abruptly, preventing the letter from achieving a truly smooth and logical flow throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases like 'crucial' and 'verifies your insurance'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'beleive', 'wokeup', 'forgeting', and 'fee for parcel' instead of 'parcel fees'. Additionally, there are minor typos like 'room number86' missing a space, and the phrase 'post canada' should be capitalized properly. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they highlight a need for greater precision in spelling and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses with 'as', 'since', and 'so'. However, your writing contains several grammatical errors in punctuation, articles, and prepositions. For example, you missed capitalisation and punctuation in 'i forgot', wrote 'on table' instead of 'on a table', and wrote 'reached at hotel' instead of 'reached the hotel'. There are also run-on sentences and comma splices, such as 'By the time i reached at hotel i was so tired so kept all my belonging on the nearby table.' These errors require some effort from the reader to untangle, though they rarely obscure your overall message completely.
