Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear sir,

I hope that you are doing well. I am writing to request you to please check and collect the papers that I forgot in the room at your hotel where I stayed on 4th of October.

I perfectly remember that I stayed in room no. 302 at your hotel on the above mentioned date. I had a parcel of papers that I secured in the right side drawer adjoining the bed of the room. While checking out I thought I have collected all my belongings, but I was shocked when I realized that I have forgotten those papers in the drawer.

These papers include my passport and my Visa permit which are very sensitive immigration identities. Moreover, I really need those documents to submit my visa extension application. Therefore, making them extremely important, I really need them back as soon as possible.

In the light of this matter, I sincerely request you to take a look in the room for those papers and keep them safe. I will be coming tomorrow to pick up those from your hotel.

Although I understand that it was my responsibility to take care of my belongings and your policies clearly states that hotel is not accountable for any materials left at the premises. But, it will be so kind of yours to help me in this situation.

Yours Sincerely,

Gurpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.5

The response covers all parts of the task very well with a high degree of appropriateness for a general correspondence task. You successfully state where you think the papers were left, specifically mentioning the right side drawer adjoining the bed in room no. 302. You clearly explain why they are important by detailing that they are your passport and visa permit needed for a visa extension application. Finally, you tell the manager what action to take by asking them to check the room, keep the papers safe, and noting that you will collect them tomorrow. The tone is appropriate throughout, and the ideas are well-developed and easy to follow, resulting in a very strong fulfillment of the prompt requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression from start to finish. You use paragraphing sufficiently and appropriately, dividing your introduction, specific details about the location of the papers, the importance of the documents, your request to the manager, and the polite closing into distinct paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used flexibly to link your ideas, such as using 'Moreover' and 'Therefore' to build arguments about the significance of the documents. Referencing is handled well with phrases like 'these papers' and 'this matter', ensuring that the reader can easily follow the connections between sentences, although occasional minor enhancements could make the flow even more seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some flexibility and precision. You successfully use less common items and appropriate phrases related to travel and administrative situations, such as 'sensitive immigration identities' and 'visa extension application'. There is a good awareness of style suitable for a semi-formal or formal request letter. While word choice and spelling are generally strong, there are occasional minor slips in phrasing, such as saying 'pick up those' instead of 'pick them up', but these minor inaccuracies do not impede communication and remain characteristic of a solid command of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The letter contains a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a variety of structures. You produce frequent error-free sentences, such as 'I hope that you are doing well' and 'While checking out I thought I have collected all my belongings'. You show good overall control of grammar and punctuation, though a few minor errors persist, such as tense consistency ('thought I have collected' instead of 'thought I had collected') and an incomplete dependent clause in 'Therefore, making them extremely important'. However, these errors are relatively minor, do not cause difficulty for the reader, and the punctuation remains clear throughout the response.
