IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Ma,

My purpose of writing is because I forgot some vital documents in your hotel. King Hotel, Mano road, on the 4th of cotober. My room number is suite (202). If I remember correctly, I left a folder containing some papers inside the drawer next to the bed, or ontop the desk by the wall.

The file contains some important documents related to my company. It has both legal and financial records that would be difficult to retrieve. This is because we made sure to delete all soft copies, to avoid leak of information. Despite this, I do not want some sensitive data falling into the wrong hands because it could be devastating to my company's image.

Furthermore, I would like to urge you to look into the matter. I am not particularly sure where I left it, but I am certain you could find out from your staff, most especially the house keepers. But incase you find it, Please have it dispatched to my home address 12, brio lane through a courier. Alternatively, you could send a mail, and I would drive over to pick it up.

Thanks in advance. I would be expecting a feedback soon.

Yours faithfully,

Odigie Ofure.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points clearly. You identify a plausible location—“the drawer next to the bed, or on top of the desk”—and explain the papers’ importance through their legal and financial content, the deleted digital copies, and the risk of sensitive information being exposed. You also make a clear request for staff to search and for the folder to be sent by courier, with collection as an alternative. These details extend and support the main ideas. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the meeting date and hotel details: “King Hotel, Mano road, on the 4th of October” is presented as a fragment, so the circumstances are not entirely clear. The purpose and requested action remain clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a sensible sequence: you explain what was left and where, describe why it matters, and then state what you want the manager to do. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Despite this,” “Furthermore,” and “Alternatively” help connect the points. The reader can follow the request without difficulty. Some connections are less smooth, however: “My purpose of writing is because…” is an awkward opening, and the hotel, date, and room details appear as a short fragment rather than being integrated into the explanation. The final request also combines several actions in a long sequence. More natural transitions and clearer separation of the search request from the delivery options would make cohesion more flexible and less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal request, including “vital documents,” “legal and financial records,” “sensitive data,” and “dispatched.” These choices communicate the seriousness of the situation, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural expressions that limit precision: “forgot some vital documents in your hotel” would more naturally be “left some important documents at your hotel,” while “send a mail” is unclear in this context and could mean a letter or an email. “House keepers” and “incase” are spelling or word-form errors, and “feedback” is less suitable than “response” in this formal closing. Aim for accurate collocations and consistent formal phrasing while retaining the useful range already shown.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes both straightforward statements and more developed structures, such as “Despite this, I do not want some sensitive data falling into the wrong hands because it could be devastating…” and the conditional “if you find it.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, showing a workable mix of sentence forms. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. “My purpose of writing is because…” is not a well-formed construction, and “King Hotel, Mano road, on the 4th of cotober” is a sentence fragment. In “I would be expecting a feedback,” the article is unnecessary with the uncountable noun, and the capitalisation in “Please” after a comma is incorrect. Revising these patterns and checking sentence boundaries would improve accuracy and control.
