Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to inform you that I may have left some important papers at your hotel during my stay and woud appriciate you assistance in finding them.
I stayed at your hotel for two nights last weekand left on monday morning. I may have left papers in the drawer of the bedside table in my room. Or maybe, I left them on the desk while packing my belongings in a hurry.
These documents are extremely important for me because they contain my educational certificates and employment related information, which I need for an important application. Unfortunately, I do not have extra copies of all these documents, so losing them could cause significant problems and delays.
I would be grateful if you could ask your housekeeping staff to check my room and the lost-and-found department. If the papers arefound, please contact me by email or phone. I would also apriciate if you could arrange to send them to my home address by courier. I'm happy to pay any neccesary charges.
Thank you for your time and cooperation. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Navneet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The letter covers all three requested points clearly and appropriately. You identify two plausible locations—the bedside-table drawer and the desk—and explain the papers’ importance by specifying that they contain educational certificates and employment information needed for an application. Your requests are also practical: asking staff to check the room and lost-and-found, contact you, and arrange courier delivery. These details make the purpose clear and the ideas well developed. To strengthen the response further, make the circumstances slightly more precise, for example by identifying the room or meeting date if known; this would help the manager act on your request. Overall, the task is addressed fully, with only minor scope for added specificity.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: the opening explains its purpose, the next paragraph gives possible locations, and the following paragraphs explain the papers’ importance and request action. The closing is also suitable for a formal letter. Linking phrases such as “Unfortunately,” “If the papers are found,” and “I would also appreciate” help the reader follow the progression. Paragraphing is effective and each paragraph has a distinct function. Some connections could be made more smoothly: the two possible locations are presented as separate alternatives with “Or maybe,” which is slightly abrupt, and the requests could be grouped in a more deliberate order. Overall, the organisation is clear and cohesive, with room for more flexible linking.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the situation, including “educational certificates,” “employment related information,” “significant problems and delays,” and “courier.” These choices communicate the purpose and urgency effectively, and the tone is generally appropriate. However, some spelling errors—“woud,” “appriciate,” “neccesary”—and the joined forms “last weekand” and “arefound” reduce accuracy. A few expressions are also less natural, such as “extra copies” where “spare copies” or “duplicates” would fit better, and “lost-and-found department,” which may be better phrased as “lost property office.” More accurate spelling and natural collocations would make your vocabulary more precise and polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response includes both straightforward sentences and more developed structures, such as the explanation beginning “because they contain…” and the conditional request “If the papers are found, please contact me…”. Most sentences are easy to understand, and the sequence of past events and present requests is generally clear. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “I may have left some important papers … and woud appriciate you assistance,” the second clause needs a clear subject (“I would appreciate”) and a possessive form (“your assistance”). “I stayed … for two nights last weekand left on monday morning” also needs clearer separation and consistent capitalisation of the day. Careful proofreading of sentence boundaries and possessives would improve control while preserving the useful range of structures.
