Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Manager,

Hope everything is going well on your end!

I am writing this letter to inform you that I left my important papers on your reception desk. I left the hotel last evening, at that time I was in rush beacuse I had to catch a flight to another coutry. At this time I am far away from your site and I cannot come to pick up these papers for 10 more days.

The documents belong to an important deal. My name and other detalis are mentioned on these papers. I talked to the receptionist already and she confirmed that she has the doucuments on hand. She said that she will handover it to the supervisor.

I humbly request you to keep those documents under lock and key. I will return on 18th March and will collect the papers. I will be so thankful to you for your act of kindness.

Your sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points clearly: you identify the reception desk as the likely location, explain that the papers relate to an important deal and contain your details, and ask the manager to secure them until you return. The practical context—leaving in a hurry to catch a flight and being unable to collect the papers for ten days—also supports your request. The purpose and desired action remain clear throughout. To strengthen the response further, develop the importance of the documents a little more specifically, and make the requested handling explicit—for example, ask the manager to confirm they have been secured and to keep them until your stated return date. The content is relevant and sufficiently extended overall.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a sensible sequence: you explain where the papers were left, give the circumstances of your departure, describe their importance, and then make your request. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and links such as “At this time” and “I will return on 18th March” make the timeline understandable. The letter is coherent overall, though some connections feel mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated references to “these papers” and “the documents.” The opening and closing also do not fully match the requested formal letter conventions. For stronger progression, use clearer transitions between the circumstances, the receptionist’s confirmation, and your request, while keeping references to the papers varied but unambiguous.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the situation, including “important deal,” “reception desk,” “under lock and key,” and “act of kindness.” These choices communicate the main message, and the reader can understand the request without difficulty. There are, however, several spelling errors—“beacuse,” “coutry,” “detalis,” and “doucuments”—and some word choices or collocations are not quite natural, such as “far away from your site” and “hand over it.” The informal opening, “Hope everything is going well on your end,” is also less suitable for a formal request to a hotel manager. More accurate spelling and conventional formal expressions would make your vocabulary more controlled and appropriate to the context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the message remains easy to follow. For example, “I will return on 18th March and will collect the papers” clearly expresses your plan, while the sentence explaining that you were in a hurry gives useful background. Some grammatical errors remain. “At that time I was in rush” needs an article, and “I cannot come to pick up these papers for 10 more days” is awkwardly structured for the intended meaning. In “she will handover it,” the object placement is incorrect; a suitable pattern is “hand it over.” The closing, “Your sincerely,” also has an agreement error. Review articles, object pronouns, and formal letter conventions to improve accuracy.
