IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Respected manager,

I am writing a letter to bring your attention about my crucial documents that I forgot in your hotel room.

A couple of days before, I stayed at your hotel for 2 days on 20th to 22nd november. My room number was 203 and I booked room as Smruti patel. When I came back at my home and I realised that my important documents were missing. At that time I remember that my paper was left by me on my room beneath the table.

This documents are so important because they contains essential imformation, such as my personal and professional work. I may need them for future work, official purposes and verification. Losing them could create unnecessary problems.

I would like to check the CCTV footage and ask your staff if anyone has found my documents. If possible, please keep them safely and contact me as soon as you find them.

I would really appriciate your help in this matter.

yours faithfully,

Smruti

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points clearly. You identify a plausible location—“on my room beneath the table”—and provide useful details about your stay, including the dates, room number and booking name. You also explain why the papers matter, mentioning personal and professional information and possible official verification, then make a clear request for staff to check and contact you. These details make the purpose easy to understand and the response is appropriately focused. To strengthen the explanation further, specify what the papers are or give a more concrete example of the consequences of losing them. The request to check CCTV is relevant, though asking staff to search the room and lost-property records would make the action more directly useful.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear sequence: you explain why you are writing, describe your stay and where the papers may be, explain their importance, and state what you want the manager to do. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and phrases such as “When I came back” and “because” make the relationships between ideas clear. The overall progression is logical and the letter is easy to understand. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and the opening paragraph could connect the reason for writing more smoothly to the details of your stay. The closing is also separated from the request without a transition. Using a few more natural links and clearer references to the papers would make the flow more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the purpose, including “crucial documents,” “essential information,” “official purposes,” and “verification.” These choices communicate the importance of the papers and the formal context. There are, however, several spelling errors, including “imformation” and “appriciate,” and some word choices or collocations are unnatural: “bring your attention about” and “on my room beneath the table.” “Personal and professional work” is also vague. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for standard formal phrases such as “draw your attention to” and “under the table in my room,” and check spelling carefully before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and the meaning remains clear throughout. For example, “Losing them could create unnecessary problems” is a well-formed sentence, and the request paragraph combines several actions effectively. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement and articles: “This documents” should be “These documents,” and “they contains” should be “they contain.” The sentence about your stay also needs a clearer construction, such as “I stayed at your hotel for two days, from 20 to 22 November.” In “When I came back at my home and I realised,” the preposition and sentence structure are not controlled. Improving agreement, articles and sentence construction would make the writing more accurate while preserving its clear message.
