Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to bring to your attention that i forgot some of my documents in room 401 that i slept yesterday night. I particularly left them at the wardrobe that I kept my luggage but I thought my other partner carried when i was addressing my team members till our bus came to pick us.
These documents are very important because I have to attend 2 conferences next week in which I am going to present for my company. Moreover, I have my approved United State of America in which is going to expire in the next one month for my Masters of Business Administration with specialization in Marketing.
i would appreciate if you can help me in finding it and sending it through a delivery company to me at our company in Lagos.
I would be grateful if i can get your response in the next 48 hours.
I look forward to hearing from you shortly.
Yours faithfully,
Kehinde Idowu.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three required points: you identify room 401 and the wardrobe as the likely location, explain that the papers are needed for two conferences and relate to your MBA, and ask the manager to locate and deliver them to your company in Lagos. The request for a reply within 48 hours also gives the manager a clear timeframe. These details make the purpose clear and support the main ideas. To make the explanation more fully developed, clarify exactly what the papers are and why the visa document is among them; the sentence about your “approved United State of America” is difficult to interpret. The opening also says “Dear Sir,” rather than the specified “Dear Sir or Madam,” though the letter remains appropriately formal overall.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a sensible order: you explain what happened and where the papers may be, give their importance, and then state the action you want the manager to take. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, while “Moreover” and “I would be grateful” connect and frame your points. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. Some links between ideas are less clear, particularly the long first paragraph, where the partner, team members, and bus are introduced without a fully clear sequence. The second paragraph also combines the conferences and visa information in a way that makes their relationship hard to follow. Separating and clarifying these details would make the progression smoother and the references easier to track.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal request, including “bring to your attention,” “particularly,” “conferences,” and “I would be grateful.” These choices help convey the purpose and maintain a polite tone. There are, however, several imprecise or unnatural expressions that limit flexibility and precision. “The wardrobe that I kept my luggage” does not clearly describe where the papers were left, and “approved United State of America” is not an understandable name for the document. “Delivery company” is also less natural than a specific service such as a courier. Choose precise names for the papers and use natural collocations so the manager can understand exactly what to search for and send.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes both simple statements and attempts at more complex sentences, such as the explanation beginning “because I have to attend” and the sentence about leaving the papers while addressing your team. The main message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “room 401 that i slept yesterday night” has an unclear relative clause and incorrect capitalization, while “I would appreciate if you can help” needs a more complete construction. The sentence beginning “Moreover” also has faulty clause structure, making the visa detail difficult to interpret. Review capitalization of “I,” article use, and sentence boundaries, and simplify sentences when several events or details are being explained at once.
