Student answer (Band 8.0)
It is widely held that at different stages of education, which is from primary schools to universities, a child spends significant amount of time in learning and memorizing facts rather than acquiring practical skills. Although theoretical knowledge is crucial for a strong foundation, I strongly agree with this because of the structure of the course and the convenience of providing theoretical knowledge rather than hands-on skill.
One significant reason why I agree with this view is that the course offered in schools and universities is designed in such a way that it favors memorization of facts. This is largely because the course work heavily rely on theoretical examinations to evaluate a student’s performance and excellence in his domain. To illustrate, universities’ course work includes assignments, lab-work, mid-term exams and final exams. Unfortunately, the weightage of mid-term and final exams is significantly higher than the assignment work and lab sessions which actually involves practical skill development. Thus, if the structure of the course itself favors memorization of facts and ability to retrieve information, students are bound to follow the structure , thereby lacking practical knowledge. This, in turn, adversely affect their employability as industries value practical knowledge over academic excellence.
Equally important is the fact that offering and arranging theoretical course is more convenient rather than offering practical sessions. This can attributed to the fact that offering theoretical classes involve arrangement of a qualified professor and study hall, whereas providing practical exposure requires large investment for labs, equipments, machinery and its maintenance. Consequently, because of the convenience and cheaper costs of offering a theoretical course universities favor academic coursework rather than providing practical knowledge.
In conclusion, while academic knowledge is the foundation of everything, I strongly believe a student spends considerable amount of time learning facts rather than acquiring practical skills mainly because of the structure of the coursework and the convenience of providing theoretical courses.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear, consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding the structure of coursework and the financial convenience of theoretical instruction are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the comparison between exam weightage and lab-work. The ideas are extended logically, and the conclusion effectively reinforces the initial stance. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific real-world examples beyond general references to 'universities' to further strengthen the depth of the argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and cohesive devices such as 'To illustrate', 'Thus', and 'Consequently' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The transition between the two main body paragraphs is smooth. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the flow could be slightly more sophisticated by varying the cohesive devices further, as some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and generally precise, allowing for a clear expression of ideas. The student uses academic collocations such as 'theoretical knowledge', 'foundational', and 'adversely affect'. There are occasional minor inaccuracies, such as 'This can attributed to' (missing 'be') and 'large investment for labs', which could be more naturally phrased as 'significant investment in laboratories'. However, the range is adequate to convey complex ideas without difficulty, and the errors do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over grammar, though there are some recurring errors, such as subject-verb agreement ('course work heavily rely' should be 'relies') and missing articles ('involving arrangement of a qualified professor'). Despite these occasional slips, the majority of sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly. The complexity of the structures used is sufficient to support the arguments effectively.
