Student answer (Band 8.5)
Many people argue that education systems focus too heavily on memorising facts instead of teaching practical skills that students can use in everyday life and future careers. I agree with this view because practical abilities are becoming increasingly important in the modern world. However, factual knowledge should not be ignored, as it provides the foundation for learning.
One reason I agree is that many students leave school or university without essential life skills. Although they may achieve good academic results, they often lack practical knowledge such as financial management, communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. These skills are valuable in both personal and professional life. For example, knowing how to prepare a budget, write a professional email, or work effectively in a team is often more useful in the workplace than memorising large amounts of information.
Another reason is that employers increasingly value practical experience. Many companies prefer graduates who can apply their knowledge to real-life situations rather than simply recall facts from textbooks. Schools and universities could better prepare students by offering internships, project-based learning, laboratory work, and vocational training. Such experiences help students develop confidence and become more job-ready.
However, factual knowledge remains essential. Subjects such as mathematics, science, history, and languages require students to understand key concepts and facts before they can apply them effectively. For instance, a doctor cannot treat patients without first learning human anatomy, and an engineer must understand mathematical principles before designing structures. Therefore, practical skills should complement, rather than replace, academic learning.
In conclusion, I agree that education should place greater emphasis on practical skills because they help students succeed in everyday life and employment. Nevertheless, factual knowledge remains the basis of education. A balanced curriculum that combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience is the most effective way to prepare students for the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. The arguments are well-developed, with specific examples provided for both sides of the debate, such as financial management and teamwork for practical skills, and medical or engineering training for factual knowledge. The conclusion effectively synthesises these points, advocating for a balanced curriculum. The development is logical and consistent, meeting all requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the argument for practical skills and the counter-argument regarding factual knowledge is smooth. You make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'However', 'For example', 'Another reason', and 'Therefore'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, and the flow of information is natural and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic discussion. Phrases like 'essential life skills', 'project-based learning', and 'theoretical knowledge' are used accurately. The vocabulary is precise and contributes to the clarity of your arguments. While the range is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common collocations could elevate the response further. Overall, the lexical control is strong, and there are no errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5
The essay displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You use a variety of complex sentence structures effectively, such as conditional clauses ('if they can apply them effectively') and subordinate clauses ('Although they may achieve good academic results...'). Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are virtually no grammatical errors. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent, and the writing is fluent and professional, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence.
