Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is widely debated that learning institutions do not provide enough knowledge about practical skills unlike they do with learning facts. I firmly agree with this view because due to the insufficient practise of practical skills students suffer to cope with physical world.

One of the main reasons of teaching facts to children since early age is that they can relate the physical phenomenas to their education. For instance, children in primary school often introduced to the concept of gravitational force and the laws of newton to solve some science and mathematics problems. Undoubtedly, this knowledge is pivotal in pursing career either in physics or to become a scientists.

However, schools and universities do not spend equal amount of time in introducing practical life concepts to the learners. This includes the use of credit card, dealing with some problems financially and emotionally. It is evident in graduates at any level they struggle to take independent control while handling money as well as while starting a new job. If learning organizations would start some lessons about these things, then students will be able to develop strong foundation of household or professional tasks which will be suitable for them in leading a smoother life without the help of others.

In conclusion, although learning facts are important for higher education, practical skills are equally important to make younger generations smarter or self sufficient. Schools and Universities should adopt a balanced approach to provide information on both topics as they prepare the youngsters for the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, maintaining a clear position throughout. The argument is logical, distinguishing between the value of theoretical knowledge and the necessity of practical life skills. Ideas are supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of Newton's laws and the need for financial literacy. While the development is generally good, some points could be expanded further to reach a higher band; for instance, the discussion on 'emotional' problems is mentioned but not fully explored. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the question posed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance,' 'However,' and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the discussion of theoretical facts from practical skills. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions between sentences could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for clear communication. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'pivotal,' 'independent control,' and 'self-sufficient.' However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'physical phenomenas' (should be 'phenomena') and 'insufficient practise of practical skills' (should be 'practice' as a noun). Despite these minor slips, the range of vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning effectively without causing confusion for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'children in primary school often introduced' (missing 'are') and 'pursuing career' (missing 'a'). Additionally, the phrase 'if learning organizations would start' is slightly awkward; a more natural structure would be 'If learning institutions were to introduce.' While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. The student shows a good attempt at using complex sentences, and punctuation is generally accurate throughout the text.
