IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that in all levels of education, from primary schools to universities, too much time is spent on learning facts and not enough on learning practical skills.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is argued that modern educational institutions from primary levels are forced to focused to prioritize theoretical knowledge rather than the practical skills .
I completely disagree with view as students are acknowledged to learn theories to remember historical dates , charts etc. In my opinion if we ask student to learn these learning facts and then explain them through practical skills it will be more beneficial. We should improve our education system , we should add computer labs in our school and universities where students can do practical work .Hands-on skills you can use in daily life or in a job.Universities teach a lot of theory and reading from textbooks, but not enough practical, hands-on work. These are the reasons because of which our students are lacking skills like managing money , communicating well and thinking critically . Students leave school with a head full of facts but don't know how to handle real-life problems, this should be improved .Education needs a better balance between book knowledge and real world skills. Having skills will help students to find better jobs and opportunities.
However, when I began preparing for professional environments, I realized I had received no practical instruction on using accounting software or managing audits. There were many essential skills which i didn't know .
In conclusion, academic institutions across all world should start practical skills with theoretical knowledge , so that students could learn more through these practical and would have better chance of jobs and opportunities in future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position, although the stance is slightly contradictory; you state you 'completely disagree' with the view that too much time is spent on facts, yet your subsequent arguments support the idea that the current system is unbalanced and needs improvement. The ideas are relevant, such as the need for computer labs and practical training, but they are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. To improve, ensure your position is consistent throughout and provide more detailed, specific examples of how integrating practical skills would change the educational landscape, rather than simply stating that it should be done.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is hindered by abrupt transitions and repetitive sentence structures. While you use some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'In conclusion', the connection between ideas is often mechanical. For instance, the transition between the general discussion of education and your personal experience in the penultimate paragraph is quite sudden. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that directly supports your main argument, creating a smoother progression of ideas throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on basic terms like 'learn', 'facts', and 'skills' repeatedly. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'across all world' instead of 'across the world' and 'start practical skills' instead of 'incorporate practical training'. To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition. Expanding your range of vocabulary will help you express your ideas with greater nuance and sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally impede readability. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'institutions... are forced to focused'), missing articles, and inconsistent capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with spaces placed incorrectly before commas and periods. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly verb forms and sentence punctuation. Working on complex sentence construction will also help you demonstrate better control over your writing.
