Student answer (Band 6.5)

Education is the vital part of our society. Some people claim education system is spending too much time on teaching a child facts and theories, but not practical skills. I partially agree with the given notion, as I believe there should be balance of both to make education, and education system more worthy.

To start with, there are number of reasons why theoretical knowledge and facts are important at all levels of education. The first and the most prominent reason could be to understand the theory. To explain, facts are the fundamental part of understanding the concept behind every subject that child may learn. If the concept is not clear, a child may not be able to understand. Therefore, they may not be able to implement in practical world. For example, imagine if child is not aware about anything related mechanical things, and he or she may be thrown to real world to repair something. There is a ninety percent possibility they may not be able to repair.

However, teaching a child only facts and theory until university days will not shape their future. To elaborate, getting a theorical knowledge to child until their primary schools days would be okay, but learning the same until they turn 18-20 years would not be okay. In addition, primary school days is the time when children try to under the concept behind the theories, but when they turn 18 or 20 they should know how they can incorporate theoretical skills with practical world. This could only be possible when they have taken enough practical classes.

To wrap up, yes, learning facts is good as it is the plot of any concept one may want to learn. However, learning only facts and not having knowledge of practical skills may put a child to stand behind someone when others have it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed the prompt by taking a clear position and providing reasons for both sides of the argument. The ideas are relevant, such as the necessity of theoretical foundations for understanding concepts and the need for practical application as students mature. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example regarding mechanical repair is a bit simplistic and could be expanded to better illustrate the broader educational context. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are more detailed and directly linked to the educational levels mentioned in the prompt, such as the transition from primary school to university.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central focus. You use basic cohesive devices like 'To start with', 'However', and 'To wrap up' to guide the reader through your argument. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, the transition between sentences can sometimes feel a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'this', 'these') is used more precisely to connect ideas across sentences. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'prominent', 'fundamental', and 'incorporate' correctly. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'theorical knowledge' (theoretical) and 'mechanical things' (mechanical systems). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'child' or 'children'. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition. The vocabulary used is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without causing difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the vital part', 'in real world'), subject-verb agreement issues ('there are number of reasons'), and awkward phrasing ('put a child to stand behind someone'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage and ensure that your complex sentences are constructed with greater precision.
