Student answer (Band 8.0)
Some people believe that schools and universities spend too much time teaching facts and not enough time developing practical skills. I largely agree with this opinion because students need both academic knowledge and real-life abilities to succeed in today's world.
On the one hand, learning facts is an essential part of education. Subjects such as mathematics, science, and history provide students with the knowledge needed to understand the world and pursue higher education. Without a solid academic foundation, it would be difficult for students to become doctors, engineers, or scientists. Therefore, factual knowledge should continue to play an important role in every stage of education.
However, I believe that practical skills deserve much greater attention. Many students graduate with excellent grades but struggle to manage everyday responsibilities or perform effectively in the workplace. Skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, financial management, and critical thinking are valuable in almost every career. For example, a student may know many scientific theories but still find it difficult to work in a team or present ideas confidently. If schools included more project-based learning, internships, and hands-on activities, students would be better prepared for real-life challenges.
From my own experience, practical training often leaves a stronger impression than simply memorizing information. As a plumber, I learned the basic theory in the classroom, but it was the practical experience on construction sites that helped me develop confidence and improve my skills. This shows that knowledge becomes much more useful when students have opportunities to apply it in real situations.
In conclusion, although factual knowledge remains essential, I believe education should place greater emphasis on practical skills. A balanced approach would prepare students not only to pass examinations but also to succeed in their personal and professional lives.

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it consistently throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, with a logical balance between the necessity of factual knowledge and the importance of practical skills. Your personal example as a plumber provides a relevant and convincing illustration of your argument, which adds depth to the discussion. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance and provides a final thought on the need for a balanced approach. The response is well-structured and directly answers the question asked.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using effective cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. The use of referencing is clear, and the flow of information is natural. You have managed paragraphing well, ensuring that each point is distinct and contributes to the overall argument. The cohesion is unobtrusive, allowing the reader to follow your line of reasoning without difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'academic foundation', 'project-based learning', and 'real-life challenges' are used accurately and appropriately. While the vocabulary is generally standard, it is well-suited to the task and conveys your meaning clearly. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions, but the current range is more than adequate for a clear and professional response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a good command of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as the conditional structure 'If schools included more..., students would be better prepared...'. Punctuation is accurate, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. The control over verb tenses and subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the text. There are no major grammatical errors that impede communication, and the writing is fluent and easy to read.
