Some people say that in all levels of education, from primary schools to universities, too much time is spent on learning facts and not enough on learning practical skills.

Student answer (Band 8.0)
Universities are places where pebbles are polished, and diamonds are dimmed. Many people believe that, nowadays, from primary school to university, students are spending more time learning facts rather than focusing on developing practical skills and gaining hands-on experience. I completely agree with this argument, and this essay will present related examples in the upcoming paragraphs.
To begin with, schools and universities often prioritise exams, grades and theoretical knowledge and judge students' capacity based on them. As a result, students have to memorise large amounts of information, which is very time-consuming and leaves students with insufficient knowledge about the practical. For example, a biology student may memorise the names and functions of organs but have very limited experience applying this knowledge in a laboratory. Similarly, these encourage students to remember facts rather than understand how to apply them.
Moreover, Practical learning helps students develop skills that they need in employment and everyday life. One of the main noteworthy reasons to learn practical skills is that students learn problem-solving, leadership and communication skills. In addition, they can learn how to apply theoretical knowledge to the practical world. Practical experience can make the transition from education to employment easier. For instance, when students conduct experiments, participate in projects, or solve real-world problems, they are more likely to understand and remember what they have learned.
In conclusion, although factual knowledge is essential for academic success, I firmly believe that practical experience is more valuable in the long term, as it allows students to apply theoretical concepts, develop problem-solving skills, and prepare themselves for the demands of the workplace.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. For instance, the distinction between memorising biological facts and the lack of laboratory application provides a clear example of the imbalance described. The argument is well-supported with reasons regarding employment and real-world problem-solving. To reach a higher band, the student could further extend the discussion by exploring the potential counter-argument—why factual knowledge is still necessary—in more depth before refuting it, which would provide a more balanced and sophisticated exploration of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the transition between the focus on academic testing and the benefits of practical skills is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'For instance' are used effectively to guide the reader. The referencing is generally clear, although the use of 'these' in the sentence 'Similarly, these encourage students...' is slightly ambiguous as it refers back to a general concept rather than a specific noun. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the clarity of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and generally appropriate for the task. The student uses some effective collocations like 'hands-on experience', 'theoretical knowledge', and 'academic success'. There is an attempt to use more sophisticated language, such as the opening metaphor 'pebbles are polished, and diamonds are dimmed', though this is slightly abstract. Some minor word-choice issues exist, such as 'insufficient knowledge about the practical', where 'practical skills' or 'practical application' would be more precise. The range is adequate to convey complex ideas clearly without significant repetition.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is generally accurate. There is good control over complex structures, such as the conditional-like construction 'when students conduct experiments... they are more likely to understand'. A few minor slips occur, such as 'these encourage students' (where the antecedent is unclear) and the phrasing 'knowledge about the practical', which is slightly unidiomatic. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication, showing a solid command of grammar.
