IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that in all levels of education, from primary schools to universities, too much time is spent on learning facts and not enough on learning practical skills.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Some argue that a substantial amount of time is awarded to learning facts in educational institutions rather than on valuable professional skills. In this essay I will present my opinion how this fact is true and is also affecting the society.
I will take side by asking a question, whether the students graduated from universities are able to mend or repair household items when turned out of order? Obviously, a thought that provokes, after the answer being no, is if students had been taught vocational skills besides curriculum in educational institutions, they would have been able to do these tasks on their own. Moreover, if I ask another question, what percentage of earth is covered by water? I'm sure, majority would answer right, it's seventy percent. The reason of answering correct to the second question and not knowing the practical skills lies in the fact that we have been made spent a lot of time on learning facts rather than on gaining hands-on experience in educational institutions.
Moreover, skill shortages in industries is also a proof that not enough time is given on making students learn vocational skills. For instance, Canadian Personal Residence Pathway for skilled trade workers, such as plumbers, electricians, carpenters etc is an example of shortage of skilled trade-workers in industries and across the country. Many other countries are facing the same issues. Societies cannot function without individuals having these skills. If students were made to learn these skills in institutions, consequences would be different from the present world's scenarios.
Moreover, the vocational institutes offer professional skilled courses of varying durations worldwide. If students were made learnt these professional skills in educational institutions, separate kind of vocational skill institutions would not be needed. Additionally, a surging trend of gaining hands-on experience among students to earn a living, while pursuing higher education in first world counties, also depicts that our primary, secondary and tertiary levels of education systems lack in providing these skills.
In conclusion, educational institutions should include credit hours for students to learn future-proof skills. Increasing number of vocational institutions and individuals inability to repair their own household items speak for giving proper attention to vocational skills at all levels of educational institutions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The essay addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. You have provided relevant arguments, such as the lack of practical life skills and the industrial demand for trade workers. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the rhetorical questions in the second paragraph are a bit informal and could be replaced with more direct, analytical statements to strengthen the academic tone. While the examples provided, such as the Canadian skilled trade pathway, are relevant, they could be integrated more smoothly to better support the central argument. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved by varying the structure of your cohesive links. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, some sentences, particularly in the second paragraph, feel slightly disjointed due to the repetitive use of questions. Improving the variety of your linking phrases would elevate the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'vocational institutions', 'curriculum', and 'future-proof'. There are some instances of slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'when turned out of order' and 'made spent a lot of time', which indicate a need for more precise collocation. While you attempt to use more sophisticated language, some word choices are not entirely natural. To reach a higher band, focus on using collocations that are more common in academic writing and ensure that your vocabulary is used with greater precision and flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'students graduated from universities' (should be 'students who have graduated'), 'made learnt' (should be 'made to learn'), and 'individuals inability' (missing possessive apostrophe). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, the correct use of passive voice, and ensuring that complex sentence structures are grammatically sound. Proofreading for minor errors in articles and prepositions would also be beneficial.
