Student answer (Band 6.0)

A person spends most of their student life time in studying theoretical subjects rather than practical classes. I agree with the statement because spending more time in theory lectures help students to gain higher result and to understand fundamentals of practical classes.

In school, It is important for a pupil to attend more theoretical classes for scoring higher rank in a school or a university. This is because in exam, most of the marks are being covered from books or lecture slides. If a student has spent enough hours studying facts rather than practical lectures, he or she might be able to perform better in exams because most of the questions will be from textbooks. For example, recent study proves that top scorer students in Gujarat Univercity tend to score higher grades in Chemistry exam than pupils who were excellent at scientific experiments.

Moreover, learning theoretical knowledge is vital to understand perform well in practical classes. To explain, without having basic knowledge from textbooks, a person cannot understand basic concept in any practical class. For example, a person cannot measure the speed of an object if he does not know the physics formula which is being learnt from textbooks or theoretical classes.

To conclude, although it is important to have real life practical knowledge to land a job, but having perfect knowledge of textbooks is not only important to score higher score, but it also helps to understand practical classes

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the essay is under the 250-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the development of ideas. While the arguments regarding academic success and foundational knowledge are relevant, they are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. The examples provided, such as the reference to 'Gujarat Univercity', are specific but could be better integrated to support the argument more persuasively. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more detailed explanations and ensure the essay meets the minimum word count to allow for full development of your position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'To explain', and 'To conclude' to link your thoughts. However, the use of these devices is somewhat mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the overall structure is quite brief due to the limited word count. To improve, try to use a wider range of cohesive devices and ensure that your referencing is precise to create a more natural flow between your arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on common terms like 'theoretical subjects', 'practical classes', and 'higher grades'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'Univercity' instead of 'University'. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary and collocations related to the topic of education, such as 'academic rigor', 'vocational training', or 'theoretical framework', rather than repeating basic phrases throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'spending more time in theory lectures help' (subject-verb agreement) and 'most of the marks are being covered from books' (awkward passive construction). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as the unnecessary comma in 'although it is important..., but having...'. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and reducing redundant phrasing. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy will help you move toward a higher band.
