Student answer (Band 8.0)

Some people argue that educational institutions spend too much time teaching facts and not enough time developing practical skills. I largely agree with this view because although factual knowledge is important, students also need to know how to apply what they learn in real-life situations.

On the one hand, learning facts is an essential part of education. Students need a strong foundation of knowledge before they can understand more complicated ideas or solve problems effectively. For example, a student studying biology must learn basic information about cells, organs and genetics before being able to conduct meaningful scientific research. Similarly, university students need theoretical knowledge in subjects such as engineering, medicine and law before they can work professionally. Therefore, it would be unrealistic to remove factual learning from education.

However, I believe that schools and universities should place greater emphasis on practical skills. In many cases, students can remember information well enough to pass an examination but struggle to use that knowledge outside the classroom. Practical activities such as experiments, presentations, teamwork, problem-solving exercises and internships can prepare students much better for employment and everyday life. For instance, a business student may learn accounting principles from a textbook, but managing a real budget or preparing financial statements for a small organisation would provide a much deeper understanding of the subject.

Another important advantage of practical education is that it develops transferable skills. Communication, time management, critical thinking and teamwork are valuable in almost every career. These abilities are difficult to develop simply by memorising facts. In my experience, people often remember information more effectively when they have used it to complete a practical task.

In conclusion, factual knowledge remains an important foundation of education, but I agree that too much emphasis can be placed on memorisation and examinations. A better educational system would combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience so that students are not only well-informed but also capable of applying what they have learned in the real world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, with relevant examples provided for both sides of the argument, such as the mention of biology students needing theoretical foundations and business students benefiting from practical accounting tasks. The conclusion effectively synthesises your arguments and reinforces your stance. The response is balanced and demonstrates a strong understanding of the task requirements, providing a logical progression of ideas that directly answers the question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using appropriate linking phrases such as 'On the one hand', 'However', and 'Another important advantage'. The use of cohesive devices is natural and unobtrusive. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different stages of your argument. The referencing is clear, and the overall structure of the essay is coherent, making it very easy for the reader to follow your line of reasoning from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. You use academic collocations effectively, such as 'educational institutions', 'theoretical knowledge', and 'transferable skills'. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the context, it is functional rather than highly sophisticated. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more nuanced or less common lexical items to express your ideas with greater flair. However, the current range is more than adequate for the task, and there are no errors in word choice that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'although factual knowledge is important, students also need...'). The grammar is highly accurate, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. You demonstrate a strong command of complex structures, and the occasional minor slips are rare and do not affect the clarity of your writing. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent and reliable.
