Student answer (Band 8.0)
Education plays an important role in preparing people for their future careers and personal lives. Some people argue that schools and universities spend too much time teaching facts and not enough time developing practical skills. I agree with this view to a large extent because although theoretical knowledge is important, practical skills help students apply what they have learned in real-life situations.
First, learning facts provides students with a strong foundation of knowledge. For example, students need to understand mathematical formulas before they can solve complex problems, and medical students must learn about anatomy and diseases before treating patients. Therefore, factual knowledge cannot be completely removed from education. However, memorising information alone does not necessarily mean that students can use it effectively.
More attention should be given to practical skills because they prepare students for real-world challenges. Skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, financial management, and time management are essential in both professional and personal life. For instance, a university student may achieve excellent grades in business studies but still struggle to communicate with customers or work effectively in a team. Practical activities such as internships, presentations, group projects, and workplace training can help students develop these abilities.
From my own experience as a graduate student, I have found that practical assignments are often more useful than simply memorising information. For example, studying regulatory affairs involves learning many laws, regulations, and guidelines, but understanding how to apply them to real pharmaceutical products requires practical case studies and problem-solving exercises. This type of learning makes theoretical knowledge easier to understand and remember.
In conclusion, factual knowledge is an essential part of education, but it should be balanced with practical learning. Schools and universities should provide students with more opportunities to apply their knowledge through projects, internships, simulations, and real-life problem-solving activities. This would better prepare students for their future careers and everyday responsibilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between theoretical foundations and the necessity of practical application. You provide relevant examples, such as the medical student analogy and your own experience in regulatory affairs, which effectively support your argument. The conclusion provides a balanced summary that reinforces your main point. The response is well-structured and directly answers the question asked, demonstrating a strong grasp of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, starting with the importance of facts, moving to the necessity of practical skills, and concluding with a synthesis. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'However', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the relationship between sentences is clear. The flow is smooth, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive transitions. The structure is coherent and supports the overall argument well.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'strong foundation of knowledge', 'real-world challenges', and 'regulatory affairs' show an ability to use topic-specific language effectively. While the vocabulary is accurate and natural, it could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, and the language used is appropriate for an academic or formal context. The vocabulary is consistently used to convey your meaning clearly and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a good variety of complex structures, such as conditional-like constructions ('before they can solve', 'although theoretical knowledge is important') and relative clauses. The majority of sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and grammar is strong. There are no major errors that impede communication. While the grammatical range is solid, incorporating a few more varied sentence types or more advanced syntactic structures could further enhance the quality. Overall, the writing is accurate and demonstrates a high level of grammatical control.
