IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in all levels of education, from primary schools to universities, too much time is spent on learning facts and not enough on learning practical skills.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

It is often argued that educational institutions spend too much time teaching facts and do not provide enough opportunities for students to develop practical skills. I disagree with the idea that factual knowledge is unnecessary, although I believe that practical skills should receive greater attention in modern education.

On the one hand, learning facts is an essential part of education. Students need to have a strong theoretical foundation before they can apply their knowledge in real-life situations. For example, nursing students have to learn about anatomy, diseases and medications before they can safely provide care to patients. Without this basic knowledge, practical training could be ineffective and even dangerous. Therefore, factual information should remain an important part of the education system.

On the other hand, practical skills are equally important because they help students prepare for their future careers. Many students can remember information for examinations but may struggle to use it in real situations. Schools and universities should therefore provide more opportunities for students to participate in projects, presentations, teamwork and work placements. For instance, a business student may learn theories about management in class, but working on a real project can help them develop communication, leadership and problem-solving skills.

In conclusion, I disagree that too much time is spent learning facts because theoretical knowledge is necessary for understanding any subject. However, I believe that educational institutions should create a better balance between factual learning and practical training so that students are well prepared for both further education and employment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have addressed all parts of the task effectively. You clearly stated your position in the introduction, which is that while factual knowledge is essential, practical skills require more attention. Your arguments are well-developed, with relevant examples such as nursing students and business management students to support your points. The response is balanced, acknowledging the importance of theory while advocating for a shift in focus. The ideas are extended logically, and the conclusion reinforces your main argument without simply repeating it. You have fully met the requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two sides of the argument is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. The use of referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is logical, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. The flow of information is natural, and the cohesive devices are used flexibly and accurately throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. You use academic collocations such as 'theoretical foundation', 'real-life situations', and 'educational institutions' effectively. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the task, it stays within a relatively standard range. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items to express your ideas with greater nuance. However, your word choice is consistently accurate and never impedes communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

Your writing displays a good variety of complex structures, such as conditional-like structures ('Without this basic knowledge, practical training could be...') and subordinate clauses ('...so that students are well prepared...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and grammar is strong. There are no significant errors that hinder the reader's understanding. The sentence structures are varied, and you maintain a high level of accuracy throughout the response, which is indicative of a strong command of English grammar.
