Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people argue that educational institue spend too much time teaching students factual information and not enough time developing practical skills. I largely agree with this view because, although theoretical knowledge is important, pratical abilites are essential for student to succeed in their careers and everyday lives.

On the one hand, learning facts and theoretical concepts provides students with a strong academic foundation. Subjects such as mathemetics, science and history help learners develop logical thinking, general knowldege and problem solving abilities. For example, an engineering student needs to understand mathematical formulas and scientific principles before being able to design or repair complex equipment. Therefore, factual knowledge should remain an important part of education.

However, I believe schools and universities should place greater emphasis on practical skills. Many students graduate with excellent academic results but struggle to apply their knowldege in real world situations. Skills such as communication, teamwork, financial management, computer literacy and problem solving can be developed through practical projects, presentation, internship and work placements. For instance, university student could work on real life projects with companies, allowing them to gain experience and understand how their academic knowledge is used in the workshop.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, as it is only 198 words long. Furthermore, the essay is incomplete, ending abruptly with 'From my perspective, a'. Because the response is unfinished, the position is not fully developed, and the conclusion is missing. While the ideas presented in the body paragraphs are relevant and address the prompt, the significant under-length and the lack of a conclusion prevent a higher score. To improve, you must ensure you complete the essay structure and expand your arguments with more detailed examples to meet the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a logical progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used to separate the two sides of the argument, and cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'However', and 'For instance' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the abrupt ending severely impacts the overall coherence of the piece. The flow is generally clear, but the lack of a concluding paragraph makes the structure feel incomplete. To improve, ensure you always include a clear summary or concluding thought to wrap up your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some good topic-specific terms like 'theoretical concepts', 'academic foundation', and 'real world situations'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'institue', 'pratical', 'mathemetics', and 'knowldege'. These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to express your ideas, but it lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. Focusing on accurate spelling and incorporating more precise collocations would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'educational institue spend' (subject-verb agreement) and 'student to succeed' (should be plural 'students'). Punctuation is generally handled well, and the meaning remains clear despite these slips. The range of structures is limited by the short length of the essay. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and pluralization errors, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms once you have mastered the basics.
