Some people say that in all levels of education, from primary schools to universities, too much time is spent on learning facts and not enough on learning practical skills.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
It is often argued that in educational centres, from primary to tertiary levels, students are encouraged to memorize facts instead of gaining practical skills. I agree that more emphasis should be given to practical skills, however factual knowledge should not be ignored, as it provides the foundation of learning.
The primary reason why institutes spend a significant time in theoretical learning is that the same traditional curriculum is adopted by educators every year, in which the practical component is not given equal grading proportion compared to the theoretical component. For instance, in many secondary schools, the practical exam only accounts for 20% whereas the theoretical exam accounts for the rest 80% of the grades. This disparity has led to focusing more on learning facts rather than practical skills. Therefore, many pedagogical experts believe that the education system should provide equal consideration to both practical and theoretical aspects of learning.
Furthermore, practical skills are essential for preparing students for their careers. Although theoretical knowledge provides a strong foundation, students may struggle at the workplace if they do not know how to apply what they have learned. For instance, engineering students may know complex formulas but still face difficulties when operating equipment or solving practical problems at work. Therefore, schools and universities should focus on developing practical skills rather than memorizing facts.
However, factual knowledge remains essential. Subjects such as mathematics and science require students to understand key concepts and facts before they can apply them effectively. To exemplify, a doctor cannot treat patients without first learning human anatomy. Therefore, practical skills should complement, rather than replace academic learning.
To sum up, although factual knowledge provides a strong foundation, practical skills equip students to face real challenges in their career, therefore, I believe practical skills should complement and not replace academic learning.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between theoretical foundations and practical application. You provided relevant examples, such as the 20% practical exam weighting and the engineering/medical scenarios, which effectively support your arguments. The conclusion synthesizes your points well, reinforcing your balanced view that practical skills should complement rather than replace academic learning. The response is well-structured and directly answers the question posed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'To sum up' effectively. The referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. The flow of the argument is consistent, and the relationship between the theoretical and practical aspects is well-managed throughout the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of cohesive devices, making the reading experience natural and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic context. Phrases such as 'pedagogical experts', 'disparity', 'complement', and 'tertiary levels' show a level of sophistication beyond basic vocabulary. The word choice is generally precise, and you use collocations effectively, such as 'theoretical component' and 'key concepts'. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the topic well, there is room to incorporate more idiomatic or less common academic collocations to reach the highest band. Overall, the lexical range is sufficient to convey your ideas with precision and clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'Although theoretical knowledge provides a strong foundation, students may struggle at the workplace if they do not know how to apply what they have learned.' The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. While the control is strong, there are occasional minor slips, but these do not impede communication or affect the overall flow of the argument. The majority of your sentences are error-free, demonstrating a solid command of English grammar.
