IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that in all levels of education, from primary schools to universities, too much time is spent on learning facts and not enough on learning practical skills.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that modern education systems prioritize theoretical knowledge over practical, real-work skills. Personally, I completely agree with this view, as an overemphasis on rote memorization leaves students ill-prepared for workforce and daily adult life.
The primary reason why schooling is overly focused on facts is the structure of standardized testing. In most countries, academic success is measured by a student's ability to recall date during examinations. For instance, history and science classes frequently require memorizing specific dates and formulas rater than analyzing their modern applications. While learning fundamental data is necessary to build a foundational understanding, dedicating the majority of school hours to memorization leaves little time for developing critical thinking or collaborative abilities.
Furthermore, this academic approach creates a significant gap between graduation and employment. The contemporary job market values actionable capabilities, such as coding, financial literacy, and effective communication, over passive knowledge. Many university graduates posses extensive theoretical understanding but struggle significantly when tasked with solving practical problems in a professional environment. For example, a business student might understand the theoretical frameworks of economics but lack the hand-on skills required to manage a corporate budget or negotiate a contract effectively.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that education frameworks currently sped excessive time teaching static facts. To better serve students, academic institutions must reform their curricula to place a much heavier emphasis on functional. practical skills that prepare individuals for the demands of the modern world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response clearly addresses the prompt and maintains a consistent position throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as the mention of coding and financial literacy. However, the response is 239 words long, failing to meet the 250-word minimum requirement. This under-length significantly impacts the development of the argument, as the conclusion and body paragraphs could have been more thoroughly expanded to reach the required length. Because the task was not fully completed in terms of length, the score is limited to a 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'The primary reason', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of the argument. The flow is generally smooth, though the brevity of the text prevents a more sophisticated level of cohesion that might be expected in higher bands.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. You use some good collocations like 'standardized testing', 'theoretical frameworks', and 'academic institutions'. There are a few minor errors, such as 'recall date' (should be 'recall data') and 'posses' (spelling error for 'possess'). Additionally, 'hand-on' should be 'hands-on'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. The range of vocabulary is adequate to express your ideas clearly, but it lacks the sophistication required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'rater than' (spelling error for 'rather than'), 'financial literacy, and' (missing space after comma), and 'sped' (should be 'spend'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the essay. You show an ability to use complex structures, such as the conditional-like construction in the final paragraph, but the frequency of minor errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for small typos and verb tense consistency would improve your accuracy.
